Greetings,
I’ve located a sweet pair of Thiel CS6 Floorstanding Speakers. They dip into the 2.4-2.7 ohms, 88db. Are there any members have any success with driving these or any Thiel speakers?
Cheers
@Gracie.1 How wide is your room? That may be a factor. I had the Theil 1.6, but not with Naim. Thiel speakers are reasonably sensitive and I suspect the SN3 will have little difficulty. However Thiel speakers need at least 10 feet between the speakers and considerable distance from the side walls to perform well. I had many long conversations with Thiel staff about speaker placement. If you are in the UK, I don’t see them suitable for most listening spaces. I don’t see driving them as a major issue. However getting them to perform well in your space may be an issue. Others may differ on the suitably of the SN3. However Thiel in their literature referred to amp quality bring more important than watts—noting that s robust 50 watt amp might be better than some 200 watt amps to drive their speakers. I was using a Spectrsl 80 watt amp at the time snd had no issues.
Good Luck. I suspect that SN3 will have some trouble driving the Thiels. I owned 3.5s and 3.6’s at the time I used Classe’ amp to drive them CA300 if I recall
I ran the CS1.6 too, at first with a Rega Maia and later a 250-2. The Maia could drain its power supply if turned up a bit too far but that was quite a long way, Mahler’s 10th (Cooke completion) played with an open upper window and competing with some building work just up the road. There’s a long sustained forte bit which caused the sound to sort of sparkle and jump forwards from the speakers, fortunately this was discovered on the demo pair, though it didn’t seem to leave a lasting effect, I didn’t run my own pair as high after that warning, until I had the 250, that wasn’t bothered.
A supernait? That was my first thought for the move to a Naim amp but it didn’t get past the in store demo against the 202/200 so I never tried the supernait with the Thiels.
Hi Jarbar. The room is 25’ x 12’ x 8’. Yeah, these speakers are massive. I may have to do some geometry to squeeze them in.
Thanks
I recall a dealer in Canada used to pair Thiel floorstanders (I can’t recall the models) with mid level Naim amps and sources. Whenever I heard the combination I felt it worked pretty well, all told, so could understand how the pairing made sense.
@Gracie.1 Warning. They do not perform well being squeezed in. YMMV.
Thanks Leader and Jaybar for the positive response.
I appears that they feel the Supernait 3 is underpowered for task. In addition they shared speaker setup equations and it looks they won’t fit
properly in my room.
