Anyone joining me for Dry January?

I am interested in how being intoxicated with a loss of judgement makes things better.

Although I suspect many folk have done some enjoyable things after a couple too many. (nudge nudge wink wink say no more)

According to my late mother I’m a result of this.

Some people would be substantially improved if they became less judgemental……

There’s scientific research showing that a lot of things are done better with a little bit of alcohol. It relaxes us. Of course a bit more than that and our abilities go downhill quickly.

But also alcohol is a social lubricant, we get together. We’re less tense, find it easier to chat to strangers, exactly because there are less inhibitions, less anxiety. We’re more comfortable being ourselves, a bit less facade.

That’s not the same as getting plastered.

“You obviously drink a lot. Wine, I mean. I mean, a fair amount… I mean, the right amount for a connoisseur. That doesn’t mean you’re… Does it? Some people drink it by the crate. But that’s not being a connoisseur. That’s just plain sloshed.” Basil Fawlty

I’m continuing Dry July from 2024 in Tenerife visiting my parents. I’ve always enjoyed the local Dorada lager and their alcohol free version is one of the very best.

I think you may have misconstrued my comment, however I won’t be explaining or discussing further.

Thanks for reading

The answer to the question why is because it’s not good for the gut the liver or the brain or the blood.

And I say that as a lifetime heavy drinker.

I’ve done dry January about twice in my life, and I’m doing it this year too.

I have cut down hugely over the past couple of years to about 10% of my previous alcohol consumption.

Whether I’ll ever get to absolute zero, I’m not sure, but what makes it particularly easy to cut down and give up temporarily these days is that I don’t get the same pleasure out of drinking I used to.

By the way, if you cut out meat fish and vegetable matter, what on earth would a human being eat?:nerd_face:

Seeds?

Vegetable matter…

I would say that it has to be grown to be considered a vegetable, but that’s just me.

From a seed, presumably.

Or a nut or a pip???

I regard the entire plant kingdom as vegetable matter… But not as a scientist, just as a matter of language.

So in that sense fruit would be vegetable matter.

by grown, I mean matured. as in a pumpkin is a vegetable, pumpkin seed not.

but hey - potato, potahto

Dry January? Hmmm…let’s see: last night out with Ese and friends (a solo gig which was fab, natch), total drinks excl. espresso was

G&T x2
Neck Oil x1 pt
Lge glass Malbec x1
Whiskey Sour x1
Old Fashioned x1
Shared bottle of NZ Sauv Blanc

Perhaps not so dry then.
Did have a small glass of water if that counts!

One week gone, not difficult at all. Plus more gym and a slightly better diet makes it more of a little project. A zero Guinness Thursday to Sunday before the evening meal makes it a bit easier. Sleeping better as well.

I’m not officially doing dry January as it’s just such a depressing month- culminating in the twice yearly mofo of a tax bill….

That said I haven’t drank any alcohol this month as went “all in” over Christmas and New Year.

I’m absolutely against absolutism! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I stopped in mid-2024, voluntarily, on the basis that I felt that my body would have a better chance of fighting a particular health issue if I didn’t drink. I used to drink fairly regularly and was not good at controlling my intake. There are times when I miss it but they are few and far between, and are far outweighed by the feeling I don’t get when I wake up in the morning, and the smugness I feeI when I see folk who have over-indulged and who will soon be bitterly regretting it. I don’t expect to return to drinking, ever.

It should at least now be easier to save for that next ‘night and day’ Naim upgrade!

Well done!.

10 years for me now. Even the smell of it is awful now. :face_vomiting:

I’m not missing alcohol so far. A zero Guinness or Lager before eating at weekends is enjoyable.

Mrs CW sent me this, it is very interesting.
