First generation to be released in the wild. Approach with caution. But Apple have been said to be working on a folding phone for the last 10 years. It is cool, but I have no need for a folding phone. I will buy another MacBook when the time comes. Apple user since the Macintosh SE/30 1989.

How strong the phone is matters.

But for Mac users the ecosystem is the thing. Mac products work seamlessly with each other. However, if you have essential Apps check that they will work on your brand-new phone. I wouldnā€™t be an early adopter at this price.

A foldable screen makes every sense, especially for older eyes - current Apple pocket computers, aka iPhones, have nice screens, of just adequate size, but with much large bodies than I would like. However for me to consider getting durability needs to be proven - over more than 5 years of real-world use - and cost needs to come down (a lot).

A ā€œme tooā€ product. If you need something that size buy a Pro Max or a Mini. If you need something which fits in your pocket then buy smaller. Those already in the Apple ecosystem will usually have a large phone or a phone and a tablet already. Few begrudge the first world trauma of those occasions they need to carry both around. Hard to see what the market is really.

That said, Iā€™ve also watched the excellent human being that is @JerryRigEverything on YouTube and his very easy destruction of the best of a Samsung foldable is something to give anyone pause for thought. Yes, he goes to extremes but they remain real world and, having seen what some grit or sage can do to a foldable then no thanks.

This, for me, is up there with their VR head set. A ā€œwhy would you want to look a bit of a di%kā€ product.

Nope. I have a 16, which suffices for out-of-the-house use.

However, my iPad has done a good six years -including two keyboards! - but is now ā€œfalling a bit behind the curveā€, so thatā€™ll be the next update/upgrade.

Apple products tend to present well but the issues remain:

  • what is it for if you already have Apple products?
  • who is it for if you donā€™t? What does it do that the others donā€™t?
  • who is it for beyond people who tend to be a bit of a di%k?
  • there is simply no such thing as a robust folding phone. Its life is likely to be less than 50% of other Apple products in many cases. At that price? Seriously?

Potentially yes.

Iā€™m glad I held out and didnā€™t get an iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max - my iPhone X is ancient but still does the majority of things I want. I really would like a more modern phone camera/video capabilities.

iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max likely to be ordered this weekend. Much prefer colour options to the 17 Pros as trivial as that is when theyā€™ll be in cases.

Have to say though that I really like the look of the Duo and am highly tempted to get one too.

Have to admit I was utterly impressed with the early Apple event ā€˜movie trailerā€™ type clips filmed with the iPhone Pros. Incredible quality from a phone compared to only a few years ago.
