Aro Tonearm setup Protractor

Hello, I’m new to the Aro and just obtained an excellent condition preloved Version Ser# 243853

but with no setup guide. if anyone knows where to find a scale digital /paper scale version I can download and print that would be so helpful.I am not placing the Arm on the LP12.

Grateful thanks.

I’m not aware of such a thing. There is a technical document though which gives you the info you need - particularly the pivot to spindle measurement required for mounting.

Have you a copy of the manual?

The manual looks to be available to download online from a couple of places.

Hello,

The Black covered owners manual?–yes read all but no template with it- but I would like to find/download ones for ARO so I can print out myself to scale like the printed cardboard ones than come with SME so I can find the two null points/etc.My Kuzma had simple printed one supplied also.

Oh if it is not possible for me to set the Arm as the way I have my other arms guess my foray into Aro land will have to be short-lived. Will do more searching

Thank you for the replies.

Thank you Richard that tech drawing looks intimidating–gulp!–will enlarge to A5 and study to see if I can use that information -thank you for the prompt reply.

All you need is the pivot centre to platter centre measurement - 211mm (+/- 1.5mm) - to allow you to correctly drill the hole.

Thank you again Richard–yes my tardy old brain being bought tup on Wally’s Tools/ Chris Fieckert’s fancy protractors amongst a plethora of others that drained the wallet–I should‘ve stopped and smelt the roses :joy:.
Indeed with fixed placement on all Parameters only one measurement matters for the Arm positioning yes!– I see that now.

The venerable KISS formula to the fore–fine I’m sorta clear now I think and ready to undertake the setup.

Thank you for the heads up Richard :hugs: !

The 211mm P to S is I think, for a Linn cartridge with 7mm offset between stylus and mounting holes. 212.5mm works for some Dynavectors including the Karat series which have 8.5mm offset. An Ortofon N series SPU has the longest offset I know of at 11mm and when I tried my Royal N on the Aro I thought that worth cutting another arm board for.

With another arm fitted to an SME style sliding base swapping the head shell carrying a cartridge mounted 50mm from the collar for a G series SPU (52mm) gave a narrower soundstage, restored by compensating 2mm on the base so a 1.5mm tolerance might be the advisable limit.

I think the Aro uses Berwald alignment if mounted according to the manual, at least that’s what my AS SmartRactor tells me.

If you have the little spirit level with the arm check it’s actually level, mine isn’t but is still usable one plane at a time with the high spot marked.

Here’s mine on a stripped down mk2 Townshend, sans trough and clamp while I experimented, successfully, with a TEAC mat.

Hi Yeti,

Getting cold in the good old UK now?–you’d like that :joy: !

Grateful for the info-yes I did ponder that question you outline will see how it goes as I progress into attack mode–sure is a quirky devil–I thought my Breuer’s were a handful to setup –this may take the cake!

Much appreciated the help –thank you for the snap –nice setup ,ah yes the dear old Max’s TT the Sand Groper from Western Australia!

Had some good products tho and sorely missed RIP.

Aro here I come

If you have a low range torque driver 21cNm was about right for the pillar locking screw but vary a bit around that to find your best setting. If not then as light as will hold it.

Mark a business card held against the pillar to reference height changes when experimenting.

Hi again Guys,

Sorry to be a pain but I’ve just been informed the Aro Arm I’ve just acquired the previous owner had an aftermarket “Ceramic bearing” installed. I would like to revert to the original which is included in the package.–does any one know if Clive whom use to service these is still at the factory.

Would appreciate to know as I would like to send this to HQ.

Thanking in advance,

Clive is still there but I don’t think there are any parts left now, or any facility for Aro work as the Aro build area now has an EMF/RFI test “chamber” in its place. You could always email Naim support though and ask what, if anything, is possible. Otherwise you could get in touch with Peter at Cymbiosis as I think he bought up a lot of the remaining Aro parts and spares when they were disposed of many years back.
