My SCM11s were driven by a SN3 and I thought it was great until I got a N50. The SN3 has been sold.
Does anyone know if it’s ok to keep an active speaker powered up 24/7?
ATC recommend to switch them off in between sessions - once run in they get to optimum pretty quickly so no problem
I think some of it depends on listening habits - I had 11’s with an Atom and they were superb but they would fall apart sonically if you turned the volume up too much.
In my main system my 20’s can get to 1 o’clock without breaking a sweat.
Naturally room acoustics will play apart too.

Perfect thanks FC for the information
One of the reasons I’m auditioning the active 19’s FC
I’m pretty sure ATC would have implemented the power amplifier to show the 19’s in their best light
I believe the amplifiers in the actives are similar to their P1 power amp which retails for £2,700
A friend of mine had a Boulder 2060 on his ATC. Until he tried the N50.
I do not know if I should sell my 500dr before even trying the nait50?
I will try him but currently I have this moments where I fully love my system as it is. I do not want to ruin that
. You might know what’s mean … I had quit with need to fiddle. This is present till fw situation.
These rare situations where you find peace in listening and do not tend to Analyse.
LoL
I switch mine off at the end of the day and switch them on about 20-30 minutes before listening. They warm up nice and quickly.
We will not get a lot of friends here if we continue ![]()
I may be wrong here and this is merely a guess but if one finds him/herself constantly analysing the system there may be something wrong somewhere. Something that annoys perhaps even without you being fully conscious of it.
Indeed… I had my NN50 feeding my SCM11, tried them with my EXA100 and a AETHOS, and there’s another NN50 heading up to the Northern Tundra….
Today we removed the 19 & 11’s from the system and put my partner’s Goodmans speakers back in
We both thought that the Goodmans sound very similar to the PMC Prodigy 5’s we demoed… a warm, soft and rather boring sound. Either of the ATC’s totally out perform them with their very ‘real’ sound signature
The 19 & 11’s are being returned to the dealer tomorrow with an audition of the active 19’s on Tuesday
PMC P5 need room to breathe.
ATL or not….
ATC will also benefit from some breathing space but they are indeed very different characters…
If you wanted the best of both worlds, then I can wholeheartedly recommend ALCHRIS Audio speakers.
Absolutely sublime speakers but a gamble if no demo possible.
I run TX9 in my big room and I have them gripped with the wee NN50. Phenomenal imaging, and a curious blend of the PMC and ATC…..
But the ATC are nothing, if not “honest” !
That could be true - but that is not what I meant. ![]()
I’m quite sure you are right about the Alchris TX9’s but unfortunately I have no way to audition them from so far south in Portsmouth
We both loved the ATC sound character…. they sound so real; either the 11 or 19’s would be perfect for us. I personally prefer the 19’s mainly due the bass having so much room shaking abilities (I’m not a bass freak though!) however I have a sneaky suspicion that the active 19’s may sound better still so can’t wait to hear them on Tuesday
I know I’ve changed a lot of things around very recently and a lot of forum members have questioned my rationale but what I absolutely do know is that I LOVE the ATC speaker sound
What I’m also certain about is that the demo pair of 11 & 19’s would definitely benefit from a better source than my CD5Si and/or MXN10 streamer and a beefier amp than my XS3
I’m quite willing to build a new system around ATC’s as I love their sound so much. So……
Do I buy the 19’s knowing that they would prefer, at least, a SN3 to drive them and say a ND5XS streamer? That would cost me approximately £3.5k on the used market
Or I go the active route and get the 19a’s (taking out the amp upgrade cost) and pair them with an Atom HE for streaming. I can buy the 19a’s for about £3k plus the cost of an Atom HE at about £1.5k used. So £4.5k
I have already decided that now being a streaming convert I will not need the cd player anymore
I can sell both the XS3 and 5Si cd for at least what I paid for them which releases roughly £2.2k for the Atom HE and active 19’s. The NACA5 would probably release an extra £200 so we are up to £2.4k
So for roughly £2k investment I can get the active 19’s and a much better source (Atom HE)
It makes sense to me rather than spending out on a SN3 & ND5XS to do the passive 19’s justice and the 19’s plus stands would cost £3k
Gosh I hope that all makes sense, it does to me!
You’ve made no sense since about a week ago to be honest. You love the ATC sound but want to change them out now. I give up
Of course it makes sense, it’s a great idea. I love my Atom HE and PMCs, a great sound at a sensible price and it’s neat and tidy too. What’s not to like?
