Hi n-lot,
Thanks for fully engaging with this topic. You might have spotted on the ‘What was the last bit of gear you bought in 2025’ thread that I have placed an order for an LCR meter.
I have purchased this for two reasons:-
1. So I can measure the L, C and R values of any DIY cables I might construct myself.
2. So I can measure the L, C and R values of certain commercially available cables - which is the necessary data that some cable companies are withholding.
BTW, I have a theory as to why Chord Co. are unable or unwilling to supply the basic electrical parameters of the ‘Music’ and ‘Sarum T’ ranges of loudspeaker cable.
There is an 11 year old (24:57min long) video of MD of Chord Co. conducting an interview on YouTube:- ‘Chord Co. Factory (Amesbury UK)’ which might give some clues…
At about 3:30mins into the video when the MD - in response to questions about who makes the Chord Co. wire - the MD replied:- ‘we have more than one manufacturer (in America)’, adding ‘we are not even allowed to visit that factory’. With a follow up clarification to the question about ‘what are these companies (OEMs) normally selling this wire for?’ - Chord Co. MD response:- ‘One of them makes communication wire to go up periscopes of nuclear submarines’.
My hypothesis is that Chord Co. are bound by some NDA - even though it is frankly ridiculous to not declare the basic electrical parameters (L,C and R) of the cables they sell. Plus, the values for Chord Co. Epic X LS cable are available from the experiments undertaken by Alpha Audio on their testing of 32 Inteconnect and 32 loudspeaker cables.
PS: The characteristic impedance of a cable can be calculated using the one of the two equations below:-
PPS: Would you like the ‘van den Hull: The Clearwater’ cable added to the chart to be entered into the competition ? - I did try to find the data for your cable, but it seems that The Clearwater is not a current range (now replaced by Goldwater?). The L (inductance) value will be needed for any modelling I undertake - but only measure your cable if you want the brand to be assessed as part of the Group A, B, C,…. football competition of cables!
