It does support MP3, just not within an mp4 file construct.
Kind of begs the question why the hell not?
Well, I guess it would be a somewhat obscure thing to do for specific MP3 audio files, so I guess it wasn’t worth the software development and programme space to do it… as where would you stop?
Don’t know but playing an audio stream in a video file that it would be capable of playing as a stand-alone file doesn’t sound like much development effort. It isn’t as if it is Monkeys Audio or Ogg Vorbis in the videos
