All of their competitors faced the same “US government tariff policy”, yet they succumbed to their competition, likely a result of shifting blame outward instead of taking control of their own path. Losers…
I think times are very tough out there for home audio. Whether it be home theatre or hifi. Manufacturers are faced with ever increasing costs and lack of demand. Customers are tightening their belts with a cost of living crisis which isn’t limited to the UK.
So this is sad news for Auralic and their customers.
This is very sad. While I have not seen, heard, or owned any Auralic products, they always seemed like good things, nicely designed and made. A lot of people are going to be very unhappy.
As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, it brings questions as to how worthwhile it is spending large sums of money on techy kit which is dependent on the software provided by and longevity of the manufacturer.
A manufacturer of a CDP, turntable, analogue tuner or cassette player goes out of biz yet one’s box keeps playing stuff until it breaks.
I’ve no idea now the future functionality of my Aries will be impacted by the demise of Auralic. It’s likely not going to be worth so very much, should I choose to move it on and replace with another, still supported item.
Previous and current issues regarding older Naim streaming devices keeping up with the times, and now the demise of Auralic, leads me to question the wisdom of expensive streamers.
The audio companies that are doing well and still making profits are the likes of Linn, Gryphon and Rel who I am an interested in. Their focus is on innovation and the future in technology and constantly improving their ranges.
They are spending alot more on R & D than their profits each year, in order to maintain their future survival.
I think it’s a case of engineering excellence ( and associated costs) alongside the classic business mistake of too rapid an expansion before consolidating existing income streams. It is a shame. I have placed a large sum of money with the company and would have continued with upgrades, but the new products were coming too quickly before I had the value from the existing ones. I think they also over estimated the size of the market for high price streaming.
Get down to Primare / Karma AV room at Ascot and take a listen to what the Prisma will do. And ask for some tips on how to get it to work properly.
The NP5 is a very good sounding bridge for £500. A bit basic but it does the job. While nobody wants to lose £500, if it stops working, it’s not a massive hit.
I think the pedigree doesn’t doesn’t provide any guarantee if your company is in a country that is confronted with huge tariffs and the US is an important market for your sales.
And I think we don’t have to kid ourselves, even when your company is in EU or the UK for instance the tariffs went up as well and probably sales are declining. Sword of Damocles is hanging above a lot of companies.
I tried out a Prisma product earlier this year from Peter Tyson.
Actually heard initially at Ascot last year which prompted me to try it. CD great, sound from streamer great.
However the Prisma app while pretty and notionally functional, gave me no end of grief through ios, so it went back. Upon which the guy I was speaking to told me one of his colleagues had also given up and specifically used an Android device for it!
For now, everything still works perfectly so is fine. I just can’t help but feel at some point it won’t.
Yes. I remember you mentioned it wouldn’t work very well for you.
I use android and it works fine, but not perfect, occasionally locks up my phone. When I initially got it, it was locking up a lot, but I’m sure that was down to me confusing it by trying out all its features. Didn’t like continually swapping from chromecast to nas drive.
It definitely did not like being controlled by a mobile and tablet at the same time.
Yep. And that! Plus I can’t remember the exact how’s and why’s but the way you needed to get it working/started up each time was a pita. And it forgot the order of saved items…
Auralic’s Lightning DS App is fantastic. And it works perfectly all the time. For now. At the time, Prisma was never going to replace it!
