Opinion from experience guys. Does using the system automation wire between streamer and pre, and thereby controlling volume on the app really degrade the sound?
Hi Lindsay, there are a few old threads on this, it might be worth a search, I’ve had a quick look but can’t find the thread I had in mind.
I recall people like Darkbear were convinced it does degrade sound.
I think it was agreed that this is with separate Pre & Power. I don’t recall the detail but the RC5 (System Auto) circuit is not isolated from parts of the Preamp circuits
In my case with a Supernait the RC5 circuit is buffered and that ensures isolation from the rest of the preamp circuits and cannot affect SQ.
FYI - the Naim RC-5 system is based on Philips IR (infrared) remote control communication protocol for consumer electronics.
Mike thanks, I tried the search function but I failed miserably!
I did not detect any change at all when I enabled System Automation in my system.

Lindsay, As Mike mentions, there have been a few threads on this with varying views. Best thing is to try it for yourself and see if you find any degradation in your particular setup.
You can pick up a suitable cable (3.5mm mono jack to single RCA plug) from Amazon for a few pounds to try.
I wonder how it could degrade sound quality?
The RC5 decoder chip is used whether its instructions are received from an infrared signal or a wired signal. It’s in the circuit whether it’s used one way or the other?
Also, isn’t the microcontroller supposed to go into a sleep mode when not in use, only waking up momentarily to execute an instruction?
If so, then any possible impact could only be whilst a button is being pressed, momentarily, not during normal listening time.
Isn’t this the point of utilising the sleep function?
Or am I missing something here?
Thanks guys, sounds like there isn’t too much to worry about.
Until it sends a max volume command to your pre
Think i splashed out 49p for mine. Can’t say i heard a degraded sound.
