Backup Core - can’t find NAS

I’m trying to create a first backup of my Uniti Core via the Focal Naim app. So I need to back up to external drive or network share. The only network drives shown when I go into ‘configure a new backup’ is my near defunct HDX. Any idea why my Synology NAS with a new HDD inside (which Fing shows as on the same LAN) is not appearing ??

You need to ensure in the NAS that you have a share prepped for use…
Then, within the Naim App you need to enter the credentials that that share has been set up for (i.e User and Password)…once those are within the Naim App, it should successfully search and then list any shares that use those credentials (I found it took a little while for this to happen) ….

Once you have this all entered and the Core is seeing said share, then it will also list as a potential Backup option when you go to the Backup settings…

It’s in Share Settings in the Core:

Configure Music Shares > Share Settings

BTW, I’d move this thread to Streaming Audio perhaps…

Thanks for getting back to me, it sounds like my NAS doesn’t have a share prepared for use yet then. I’ll take your advice and move my enquiry to the Streaming Audio section of the group. Cheers.

No problem.

Shout if you need a walk through doing it, though it’s fairly straight forward and you must have done so in the past if you have a working NAS on your network…

Basically, Control Panel > Shared Folder > Create Shared Folder ….

The Wizard will walk you through setting up a new share that you could use for dedicated backups from your Core….I’ve just done a quick example below for some screen grabs…

Either during the wizard setup or after via Edit of the Share, you can select User Access Permissions – by default, any Admin accounts will have auto Read/Write…I would suggest, as good practice, to use a non admin account (I only use admin account access on my Synology for things like Settings, Creating Shares, etc and with 2-Factor Authentication turned on etc…ALL other general NAS use on the network is via low-level User accounts, no admin permissions turned on etc etc) – so either one you already have (not your main admin account) or create a new User on the Synology…You then just have to tick the Read/Write box for the user on the new Share you’ve created…

This user, name and password, are what you would then enter in the Naim App…After that (sometimes it takes a little while for the Core to ‘see’ the available network shares), you should be able to select it as an available destination in the Core’s Backup Settings…

(You probably already will have, but ensure that you have SMB turned on in Control Panel > File Services on the Synology)

Hopefully this gets you sorted…

I’m trying to create a backup of my Uniti Core via the Focal Naim app. I’m following the instructions, Settings>Manage Music>Backup Music

“There are 4 options here, if this is the first time you are backing up then please use the ‘Configure a new backup’ option. It will now display all the drives it can see”. Nothing comes up. I can see my Synology Diskstation on the LAN via Fing but my Uniti Core can’t see it, any ideas?

See my reply in your other thread, just posted it…!

@Richard.Dane – don’t know if it’s an idea to merge a couple of these…?

Before setting up your network Backup Destination, you need to enter settings in the Core so that it can ‘see’ your available NAS shares…

Go to Configure Music Shares section and go to Share Settings at the bottom:

You can then enter the user name and pass for the share you’ve created on the Synology (as per my instructions in your other thread)

Once that’s done, when you then go back into Music shares (or when you’re selecting your backup location) you should then see any/all shares from your Synology that are on the LAN (as I said in other post, I’ve found this can sometimes take a little while – or a restart of the Core – for the shares to be seen by the Core….)

This looks hugely helpful, I shall go through in detail later. Many thanks for your responses.

(My Core is new, I did one backup but the NAS insisted on peeping to tell me it needed a new drive, so I bought it one, and my lack of technical nous has meant no subsequent progress. I have to confess I paid a local HiFi shop to set up my NAS a few years ago to create a back-up of my HDX - should have paid more attention as I couldn’t replicate that action again either !)

Ok, see how you go…
If you need more help, I’ll try to do more of a breakdown….

As an aside, I think you mentioned putting a new Barracuda HDD into your Synology…? Personally, I wouldn’t put such a drive in a NAS…I’m a WD advocate, so typical drives for NAS use are Red/Red Pro (I personally use Gold and UltraStar)…or if you like Seagate, there’s Ironwolf….Synology also have their own HDD range now (and somewhat compulsory for later NAS models), though IMO they’re somewhat overpriced for what they are……
Anyway, not so relevant just now, see if we can get you a Share working first…!

It was certainly the case with older servers that the share for backup had to be empty, this basically meant don’t even open the share on your pc or Mac, as hidden files get put there (particularly by Mac) that you cannot see but the Naim server could. If it found a file it would not be presented as a location for back up.

Interesting…

Mustn’t be the case now (or not as severe) as that list of shares I posted certainly have content on them…(the ones indicating zero Kb are shares without current user permission – interesting it shows them, however)

SC

Just out of interest, on the older servers, if this was indeed the case re creating a backup share and keeping it unvisited – was that just for initial set up or could you really not go near it once in use…?
(I ask as I have a unused US SSD that I’m thinking to set up for my father)

Thanks
SC

No once the hdx or what ever had latched onto the share all was good. I don’t know if this is the case nowerdays but certainly used to be

You are a wizard my friend !

Many thanks for taking the time and effort to give me such detailed help.

Richard

(I also did the @davidhendon tried and trusted turn everything off and then on again ‘router>NAS>Core’ as a belt and braces starting point !)

:+1: :grinning:

Glad it’s worked out, good stuff.

Unless you’re using the fully paid up version of Fing and Fingbox, I’d deinstall it.

It’ll block ‘new’ devices, ie new IP’s, and therefore they can’t be seen/used unless you take up Fing’s paid subscription……. to enable you to unblock them.
