Balanced Source cables to NAP 300 or 500

These cables from Naim are labeled as a connection from a NC Preamp XLR to a 300 but I would assume that they would work from a balanced source to a 300 or a 500 as well?

Does the source have XLR preamp out? Then yes. Is the source sending a regular line-level output and you need a regular XLR cable? Then no. Those Naim cables are specifically for regular XLR out to the odd non-balanced XLR in on the 300 DR that have a non-standard pin wiring. You can’t use them as regular XLR cables.

If you do plan to use them between a pre and 300DR, I would suggest checking out the cables offered by AV Options. They make much better versions than the standard Naim cables reportedly. I have ordered a pair myself but haven’t received it yet.

As they are unbalanced XLR, you will need to ensure they are both the right way around (left and right) and may need to be careful of non Naim components where the XLR out has a selectable hot pin. But yes, basically they should work from any other balanced output device (Naim or not) to the unbalanced 300/500.

Thanks everyone!

I was looking to use them on a Linn Selekt or Klimax DSM. How would I know which one is Right and Left on the back of the Selekt or Klimax?

It’s not that complicated. The back of anything with XLR out is marked L and R. As are the inputs on the 300/500. And if you ask Naim or Chord or Atlas etc to make a balanced XLR to unbalanced XLR for the 300/500, they will give you cables with red for right and black/white for left. Just make sure they are the right way around and connect R to R and L to L.
