Hi I have just bought a ND 5 XS to dip my toe further into the world of streaming . A vinyl diehard for years I want to get away from physical formats . I have a 112 250 pre power amp going to a set of PMC Db1 I that I love . So thrilled with the set up . I used it with a WiiM pro plus and was blown away with it for the money . Just curious as to how the ND 5 will compare . Maybe made a mistake ! Any advice appreciated. I only have a small home with a living room 5 meters by 5 meters now so am not looking to set the world on fire . Many thanks
Not sure what advice you want? The ND5XS was my introduction to streaming, and I was very happy with it. It is of course possible to get better sound (but I found one of them is not adding the recommended XP5XS external power supply), but nothing wrong with the ND5XS for local streaming from own music files. I didn’t and don’t stream online, for which I understand Naim’s first generation streamers have limitations -others can give more info if that is your interest.
BTW, a 5m x5m room is a decent size, on the larger side compared to many British living rooms, though if actually equal both dimensions it will accentuate some frequency resonances.
I’ve been listening to the ND5XS for years now and love it. I think the key statement you made was “for the money”. You have a high quality streamer which matches your system. Enjoy.
Welcome to the Forum. It’s slightly odd to ask for advice after the deed is done, but you must have your reasons. There are a couple of things here. The NAC 112 is probably Naim’s weakest ever preamp, and is way outclassed by the NAP 250. You really should be looking at something like a NAC 82 or 282. Then there is the ND5XS. It’s a good box, but again is outclassed by the 250. It won’t provide you with the functionality you are used to with the Wiim, as it’s now an old model, though still excellent for local streaming. If it was me I would have saved up and gone for the ND5XS2, which while recently discontinued is available at a good price and has all the current functionality.
Another alternative is to cancel the ND5XS, sell the 112 and get a 272, which is a great match for the 250. It still has limited functionality of course.
Sorry, but you did ask.
Hi Guys thanks for the advice and your opinions . Always appreciated and saves a lot of wasted time and effort . Apologies my post was a little vague . I had ordered a ND5 and was interested with the amount of hype around the WiiM how it would compare ! Well the ND 5 arrived yesterday and after setting it up I am absolutely blown away with it .
Being a vintage lover of Vinyl I stepped away from my LP 12 and don’t regret it for a second . I’ve managed to purchase a complete pre loved system for less than I achieved on the LP 12 alone and I am absolutely thrilled . I don’t want to spend a lot at the moment as am trying to set up a small business venture for my retirement .
Living in the ROI we don’t have the second hand availability or choice . One of the only downsides of living in a small country . However I am so thrilled to be away from the world of SMPS supplies in the amplifiers and love how simply and well put together the Naim kit really is . Thanks for your comments guys . Really appreciated.
And you can always connect the Wiim to the ND5 to use it’s functionality now and in the future. Use the optical out to the ND5 optical in and you will use the ND5 DAC.
