Stéphane Denève’s performance of Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (Sept. 2019) brought tears to my eyes. It was magnificent. He was supposed to do the 3rd a year later and I had looked forward to attending, but Covid ruined that plan. He is doing the 1st this spring but I’m not confident about going to hear it.

I’ve just been listening to Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs by Jessye Norman and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig under Kurt Masur. I would have to add her version of ‘Im Abendrot’ to this list of musical performances which bring a tear to the eye. There’s so much emotion in the singing and the orchestral performance.

My wife Joanne died suddenly and traumatically aged just 55 last May. I chose The Beatles “The Long and Winding Road” as the final music at her funeral. This song will never fail to bring me to tears as will the song “Joanne” by Lady Gaga.
