And Dinosaur Jr’s delightfully lo-fi cover of Frampton’s “Show Me The Way”…
It’s hard to top Neil Young, but Gillian Welch and David Rawlings do this well:
The Regrettes version of Don’t Stop Me Now is definitely worth a listen.
I was looking to see the first person to post that, it is one of the most popular tunes at crematoria , but my favourite is Anniversary Song
I LOVE America by YES, the cover of the Simon and Garfunkel tune
Kate Bush - Rocket Man
The Residents’ cover of “Satisfaction” is better than the Stones’ original, of course:
I Can’t Quit You Baby by Dread Zeppelin.
Talking Heads - “Take me to the River”
Dee C Lee - Come Hell Or Waters High
Sleeping Dogs version of East by Billy Paul…dont think its the best, but its good.
The song which sprang to mind when I saw the thread title is…
Phil Collins - Can’t Hurry Love
Also quickly thought of a back up plan…
Roxy Music - Jealous Guy
Peter
Shawn Colvin - Killing The Blues, the best version I’ve heard by a distance.
Stripped down, wonderfully expressive.
…and the worst I’ve heard - what were they thinking of (from an album which I really struggle to like):
There’s a great song in there. I look forward to the definitive version.
Eva Cassidy’s bridge over troubled water is stunning !
Yes, nice choice.
For years I thought that Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” was a miles better cover of Eric Clapton’s song. . . . I discovered years later that Dylan actualy wrote it for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid . It blew me away when I saw the film with the song in context. Such powerful lyrics in combination with the action. A must see, I think.
- Cat Power’s version of Lou Reed’s - I found a reason.
. . . what comes is better than what came before
Don’t think anyone’s mention Jennifer Warnes singing any Leonard Cohen song on Famous Blue Raincoat. Not a bad cover on the album. ![]()
