The theme from the film Notting Hill from 1999. Keith Whitley wrote it IIRC - his version isn’t bad just not as good as you know who’s below!
…no guesses which one I prefer, by a country mile. It’s not even a fair contest.

Yup, Ronan Keating thrashes the pants off Alison Krauss on this one.
Eva Cassidys version of Imagine by John Lennon, simply sublime
Also her version of Fields of Gold
Not one that I’d choose to nominate, but there’s an interesting story behind it: She’s The One by Robbie Williams.
Radio Paradise played the original by World Party the other day, and like many others I’m sure, I didn’t realise that Robbie’s is a cover.
The story can be found at: She's the One (World Party song) - Wikipedia
A couple of years ago or so, I was in an Oxfam record store browsing through their LPs. When I finally got to the counter an unmistakable voice and song came on the radio. The girl behind the counter, who couldn’t have been more than 18 or 19, remarked that the singer sounded familiar and asked me if I knew who it was. I told her that it was Bob Dylan.
Her reply was - “I thought he sounded familiar - but he’s singing an Adele song!”
I had to point out that the original version of ‘Make you feel my love’ was Bob Dylan’s, and Adele’s version was in fact the cover version.
How times change!
Sound of Silence, Disturbed
House of the Rising Sun, Five Finger Death Punch
Billie Jean, Chris Cornell
Thank You, Chris Cornell
Simple Man, Shinedown
Rocky Mountain Way, Godsmack
Wile My Guitar Gently Weeps, Tom Petty, Prince and others
The Chain, Evanescence
Zombie, Bad Wolves
I’d Rather Go Blind, Beth Hart
Anniversary Song - just sublime
Execrable would be a compliment
Quite appropriate at the moment but I’d go for:-
Therapy? - Isolation
Far better than the Joy Division original
And a fantastic one:- Concrete Blonde - Everybody Knows
boz scaggs on the beach. chrissie hynde/ valve bone woe ensemble caroline, no. a couple
of good ones
Summer Breeze, Isley Brothers’ version
Somewhere ( from West Side Story ) Tom Waits on Blue Valentine
Many of the ones above are truly outstanding.
Almost anything by the Neville Brothers, Dr. John, or Delbert McClinton is a cover tune.
Almost everything by Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer on Not Dark Yet is a cover tune and truly outstanding.
My most recent favorite is this one by Tom Jones. Much of his career’s work is cover tunes. This whole CD is a favorite. But this one rocks.
He’s pretty good, isn’t he? (but why is he singing “diddle it rain?”)
Lulu - The Man Who Sold The World.
Bowie suggested the song to Lulu, then sang backup and played sax, with Mick Ronson on guitar.
One can therefore, surely assume that this cover was fully approved by the original artist.
Great fun this topic and many good tunes.
Here are 3 more that I really enjoy:
Jolene - The White Stripes
Changing of the Guards - The Gaslight Anthem (PRaT!)
Silver Stallion - Cat Power
I’m with you on the While My Guitar Gently Weeps cover. It was doing the rounds when Prince died as his performance is phenomenal. I still watch it regularly on You Tube.
Another one firmly imprinted on my mind is Raconteurs’ cover of Cher’s Bang Bang. They brought it out during the encore at Brixton back in 2006. Brilliant.
My third regular listen is Ben Folds’ cover of Dr Dre’s Bitches Ain’t Sh*t. Clever, amusing and highly musical.
Some of my favourite covers:
Mary Chapin Carpenter – Dancing in the Dark
Metallica - Ecstasy of Gold (from The Good, Bad & Ugly)
Linda Ronstadt – Heart Like a Wheel
Sara Isaksson & Rebecka Tornqvist – The album “Fire In The Hole” (covers of Steely Dan songs)
House of the Risin’ Sun (Dylan) by Eric Burden and the Animals
What? No. I guess we’re all different.
