If you are sensible and follow their guidance eBay is safer than many platforms for selling high value article, I have sold many very expensive items via eBay and never encountered an issue, I doubt you will find an alternative selling method which offers the same level of exposure and in the uk you can now mostly sell free of fees. Selling to a dealer if you can find one willing to buy your stuff will simply result in you getting way way less money back
I sold my audio equipment on eBay, never had any issues, except on one occasion where the buyer wants me to demonstrate the functions of an RME Adi 2 DAC when he came to my place to pick it up.
+1 for eBay - Iāve sold a lot of Naim gear on eBay and without exception all the buyers have been polite and easy to deal with.
I need to sell my Superline/SCDR, plus HiLine, Burndy, Powerline and two AVO/Cymbiosis Z-Plugs. Iāve been thinking about just using The Music Room (TMR) in Colorado. They sell on consignment and take 30%, but it removes all the risk and hassle of selling it myself. They have a really good reputation from what Iāve heard.
I might keep the Powerline for my Boulder phono-stage, but Iāve been auditioning a Siltech power cord and am considering that too.
Perhaps I will give it another try, had so many bad ones before that it turned me off of it.
Indeed. Iāve sold several items, as a business seller and others as a private individual.
Recently I sold my naim gear, mostly collection only.
With eBay, you reach a much wider audience.
I have met some very nice. interesting individuals and even made some friends, usually people who come in, sit down to listen to what is being sold and end up talking about our music collections, taste in music and Hifi.
Donāt be afraid of eBay. Just use common sense and apply the usual caveats.
Enjoy the experience.
In Germany I have already sold some hi-fi items on audio-markt with no problems.
search on Hifi Shark maintains a database of links to second hand hifi equipment and look for your country
In the USA, USaudiomart. Audiogon used to be the go-to site way back when but they got greedy and just take too much of a cut (like ebay/Paypal) today.
Thereās a UKaudiomart but I donāt know how active it is.
There are no seller fees on eBay now.
DGā¦
True, but thereās tax (on ebay in the US) and paypal fees.
Perhaps I was unlucky with my stuff, it was quite a while ago, going by all your experiences I will give it another chance. Thanks for all you input, much appreciated.
I also like going via a dealer. 20-30% seems steep but they handle the demonstration, sales, and support and people forget your own time isnāt really free. I think unless you are prepared to handle the sale properly, a dealerās cut is good value.
True to an extent, however there is a ābuyer protection feeā that is added to your listing which may not be obvious to the seller but visible on on the site to potential buyers. This effectively is a charge supposedly paid by the buyer but effectively reduces the sellers price. I recently listed and item for Ā£295 but on the listing page it was Ā£307.52.
I would second GadgetManās view. I have bought a couple of exceptional (in both price and condition) Naim boxes on eBay. Admittedly I am in Europe so maybe the market is a little more selective here.
