It is a common mistake to see the pre-amp primarily as a source-switcher — this is actually an incidental function providing flexibility. An amp without a compatible pre is not a complete system. They depend on each other. The pre makes more difference than the amp, I find.
You will find other posts on this forum along these lines, asking if the pre is not redundant between the ND streamer and amp. Naim made the 172 and 272 for those wanting streaming, DAC, and pre functions in one box, and the ND streamers for those who want a versatile digital source and DAC into a separate pre or integrated amp.
