BIG system change. Your thoughts/observations appreciated

Keep the Qutest.

It’s brillaint, allows many future options and keeps you TV off the Naim system.

Seems the sensible option is to keep the Qutest. OTT for just TV sound but avoids any possible pitfalls such as ground loops. Alternative is just to use the on-board TV sound which certainly makes for easier use. @Skeptikal points out (on my related thread in Home Theatre) that he keeps TV separate. Also on same thread @jay ponts out about possible impact on sound from an electrical analogue connection. Incidentally, it occurs to me that even connecting the Qutest to the Nait might impact negatively on sound as it is powered by a switch-mode supply. Also it used to be said that amps always sound best with just one component connected, ie. the CD5si. Maybe I should just keep the TV completely separate. This seems a little perverse in a way as it sits between the speakers, but no matter I suppose.

That’s what I do.

But trial and error. It may not make any difference in your particular situation and the newer Naim gear may be more tolerant.

The CD should be providing the single signal ground :+1:

70sPete I owned the CD5si until about a month ago and it’s a brilliant cd player

I have no experience of the Nait5si but I’m sure it will be excellent

There’s every possibility that the direct analogue connection of your TV to the amp will work fine. It’s simple to try it, and just remove the connection when listening to music as a test. If you can hear that the sound is degraded, you have an alternative. Don’t overthink it!

Apparently our proposed Neat Iota Alpha speakers are discontinued. Alpha 2’s coming out in around 2 months. However I’m starting to think the Neat Petit Classics would be a better option anyway. Does anyone have any experience of these? Is the Naim CD5si/Nait5si a good enough driving system for these or is it likely to out of its depth?

I heard the Iota 2s a few months ago, so was able to make a rough comparison with the original Iotas, as I have a pair of those at home. I did think the new mid-bass driver made a significant improvement, albeit not enough to justify my upgrading what is just an office system. I don’t know if the improvement in the Iota Alphas will be as great, but if the form factor of the Alphas appeals, it might be worth hanging on for a couple of months until you can audition the newbies.

With speakers, more so than anything else, you really need to hear to know if you’ll like. One man’s (or woman’s) meat is another’s poison!

I was also under the impression the Alpha’s were discontinued

The Neat Iota Xplorer‘s are still available I believe but about 2.5 x the price of the Alpha’s

I’d decide against if its a large room, otherwise Petites are really great.

70sPete I’ve never heard the Neat Petit Classic speakers but at their size can they really be any better than Kans or LS 3/5 a’s? I kinda doubt it

Please take a listen to some ATC speakers before you decide what to buy Pete

You know I’ve owned a lot of esoteric systems in the past, much like yourself, but now got a pretty ‘simple’ setup and the only speakers that gave me anywhere close to the sound I had was to go with ATC’s

Please give ATC’s a listen before buying.. I home demoed SCM 11’s but ended up buying the 19’s … they are amazing

I’ve had systems in the past which included Klipsch speakers so I know their strengths and weaknesses

If you can feed the Klipsch Heritage range with top class SET amps they will shine otherwise they just don’t work at their best… I sold my Heritage speakers because I no longer wanted to support them with a SET amp

I am absolutely loving my simple system with the XS3 at its heart

Please don’t limit your replacement speakers to just Neat’s. Please audition, at home with your new Naim’s, some ATC speakers, I reckon you will love them

If they are only 75% as good as Kans were then that would make them pretty special!

not sure if I mentioned it before but I’d take a look at the AlChris Audio TX-1 with your amp selected.

they have benign impedance and sensitivity and offer incredible value over the Petites. And front ported ATL rather than bunged rear ports.

they will present differently to the petites, probably a cleaner and more holographic presentation due to their ribbon tweeter, but dynamically will rival the NEATS.

[caveated; I have ATC, PMC and AlChris and demo’d Petites previously]

Yet another option would be to get a basic low cost DAC such as a Topping E30 and dedicate it to the TV using the optical input. You may be surprised what modern DACs can achieve.

That’s what I would go for but having already got the Qutest I may as well just hold onto it.

On second thoughts I want to simplify the system as much as possible. Therefore the Qutest will go and TV sound will just be via TV speakers.

A simple sound bar might improve the sound markedly depending on the quality of the tv speakers (not read the whole thread so apologies if already mentioned).

If it’s a standard flatscreen the sound will be terrible. We recently bought a Panasonic Z90B, which has an integrated soundbar and subwoofer. It replaced our previous TV and soundbar. It’s much neater and sounds great, not to mention the class leading 4K picture.
