BNC to Toslink

As much as I like using the Unitiserve on my home network I’d like to use the BNC output into a Ruark R7. I’d prefer to use the Ruark Optical input which is mini Toslink or could use the RCA inputs. Any advice on BNc to Toslink adapters/converters? Thanks

I could be wrong but I don’t think such a thing exists a one is a light signal (TOSLink) and the other electrical (BNC).

Can you not just stream to it from the UnitiServe?

It should be possible indeed if I look at the Ruark site …

Why would you need an adapter? Just use the Unitiserve optical output.

I have one in my spares draw. Coax in and optical out or vice versa.

As Chris says, the US has an optical out anyway so I’m not sure why it would be needed.

Yes I can. However using the R7 function controls overide the Naim App. So wanted a way to continue to use the Naim App whilst playing music through the R7.

My apologies I have a UnitiCore with a BNC output

My apologies it’s a UnitiCore with a BNC output

Hi James, thank you, want is the make of the converter?

In that case, yes, you would need an adapter.
Are you sure you want to use the Naim app? It will not give you access to the Ruark volume control, input selection etc so in practice you will be using the Ruark app or remote as well. Is the Ruark UI that bad?

Hi Nick - It’s a generic one bought off Amazon. Lots available under different names. The one I bought back in 2021 is unavailable, but this looks to be the same thing.

It needs a 5V power supply but it can be powered by the host device if it has a USB A socket that can supply power rather than needing a separate power adapter.

Hi Chris, in Music server mode the R7 has less functionality than the Naim App. I may have been somewhat spoilt by my previous music server a Popcorn Hour C300 which had the best GUI interface I have used so far. Sadly despite several repairs the Popcorn had to be replaced as this in no longer in manufacture. The only drawback of the Popcorn was the quality of the rip. It puzzles me why Naim would continue to use BNC as an output, rather out of date now.

Hi James, thank you

Naim use BNC sockets for coax digital connections because they provide the correct 75Ohm impedance which you would not get from the commonly used RCA connection, although RCA would still work well enough.
The Toslink alternative for SPDIF is a very basic optical implementation, which Naim do offer on some equipment but they generally recommend coax BNC for best performance.
For a server/streamer setup of course, they would say that a network connection should be used, removing the need for a direct point to point connection altogether.

All sorted now. Shout out to Compass Audio for the custom made BNC to RCA (75ohm), connected now to a CYP AU D21 converter to toslink into the optical inputs on the Ruark R7. Much better sound quality than using the network cabling.
