Disclaimer: obviously I have not tested or used all the streamers in the world, very far from it. I had in my possession for almost a year a Silent Angel Bremen streamer, for 2 months an Eversolo A6 Master Edition and a Wiim Ultra and of course the MXN10 for 15 months now.
Understanding that we all have different requirements and needs, the strengths or weaknesses of the streamers measure IMO in the following departments:
-
User interface ease of use and stability
-
Streaming services offered , connections etc.
-
Sound quality
The numbering priority has a significance for me.
So here are a few rhetorical questions.
How much of use to me is a streamer that is not stable with frequent dropouts and I have to reset it every once in a while?
How much of use is a streamer that has a buggy user interface.
How much of use is a streamer that doesn’t offer the streaming services that I normally use?
The answer for me on these questions is “None”.
Regarding the MXN10, its user interface is very simplistic and doesn’t offer much in the settings department as the Wiim Ultra let alone the Eversolo which is in another level. But it is so quick, stable and easy that it is a joy to use.
It offers all the streaming services I can imagine, I have a subscription to Tidal for me (Tidal Connect), a subscription to Apple Music which my wife prefers (Airplay) and a subscription to Spotify that I want to get rid off but my son won’t let me (Spotify Connect). And of course a seemingly myriad of Radio stations.
Regarding its sound I would describe it as “plain vanilla” which of course means nothing to you but to me it means a sound that is never offensive and always plays on the safe side. It doesn’t wow you with its dynamics or the detail unearthing nor with its resolving abilities especially in classical music content, but it’s ok.
The Silent Angel streamer that I used for almost a year had a formidable sound to my ears but that thing refused to play continuously for more than 3 hours and had excessively frequent dropouts.
The Eversolo was way too analytical to my ears and tastes while the Wiim followed it closely.
I have a feeling that we as audiophiles are in a predicament, on one hand we have the companies that excel in software development but leave a lot to be desired in the sound department and on the other hand we have companies that offer great sound but their software and UI is a little bit lacking.
I may be wrong but that’s my take on it.
