Cambridge Audio MXN10 Streamer

I have just ordered a MXN10

I’ve never thought about streaming until a few days ago so thought I’d dip my toe in and see how I get on without spending a fortune

The MXN10 gets very good reviews and it’s just £350 with a 60 day return if I don’t get on with it

Does anyone else have one?

@ninanina Reviees are of limited value in the streamer may sound very different in a Naim system. If you like the Naim sonic signature, I would suggest stretching and getting an ND5XS2.

Now that’s a new word.:face_with_peeking_eye:

I knew that, just think it’s funny how auto correct makes up words that don’t exist.

@NO-QUARTER Not correct spelling does not change my recommendation. The OP needs to audition perspective purchase to get an idea how it coexists with their system. It may or may not be a good sonic match. If something is ill matched then a bargain is not relevant

Don’t have one but as you say well received and there are some really good value solutions out there.

One of the first to market was the Yamaha wx-ad10, cracking little unit which I started with for streaming. My daughter now has it in her system and I gave the other one to a mates son heading off to uni.

They look near identical to the Wiim Pro units of today and it was an odd one that Yamaha moved out of the space as it just got lift off, or maybe they saw the direction of travel and knew they couldn’t compete down the line in that sector.

Got a couple of Wiim Pro pluses and an Ultra, all then into DACs but they all sounded fine on their own but can be improved upon.

Reckon you’ll enjoy it within your system.

There’s a whole market of really good value DAcs out there too so if you want to experiment you can get a sound that appeals to you.

I’ve got a Naim CDX2.2 cd player and found that the Fiio R11 R2R Dac brings the Wiim streamer more into line with that sound signature.

But I’d just listen to the Cambridge for a while, they seem to know what they are doing.

I considered this streamer, but went for the Bluesound Nano for size reasons. The fact these streamers do not have a screen and some other differences, take a lot of the cost out of these streamers. The MXN10 has had good reviews from some reliable reviewers.

My €300 Nano sounds great with my Lehmann Audio headphone amp and HD600S headphones. Much better than I expected.

The cost of these electronics is falling in a very competitive sector.

Here is mine on the bedroom system. The buttons are very useful, they are preset with favourite radio channels. It always works.

Sound quality is fine - I’ve not really compared it to the bigger Naim systems - it supports Spotify lossless.

Another reason to get this is that I somehow like British Hifi and Cambridge definitely qualifies despite its made in China or so.

What are the two olive boxes on the bottom shelf?

It’s hicap and nap 140 controlled by a 72. A marvelous system which could be used in much bigger rooms with better speakers.

Lovely setup!

I have the CXN100 I mainly use it to for playing from my sd card, I don’t use any streaming services Occasionally I listen to the radio, I’ve had mine about 8 months now, I’ve never had problem with it, never had to reset it,

Yes I use one for 15 months now.

The thing I like most is that it has such a simple and straightforward UI everything logically laid out and in these 15 months never ever did I have to reset it. It just sits there and does its thing, nothing more nothing less.

That said next year I plan on getting a better streamer or streamer/dac to pair with my NN50 but I really don’t know where to start. If the streamer is not stable or the UI is too crowded and “clunky” it is a no go for me.

I was thinking of a Lumin U2 mini as I’ve read good things about them but I have to audition and use it for some time to be sure it is stable and that its UI is intuitive.

Another option would be to keep the MXN10 as a transport since I like so much the UI and stability and buy a really good Dac to go with it.

How do you rate the MXN10 Ris?

@ninanina

Disclaimer: obviously I have not tested or used all the streamers in the world, very far from it. I had in my possession for almost a year a Silent Angel Bremen streamer, for 2 months an Eversolo A6 Master Edition and a Wiim Ultra and of course the MXN10 for 15 months now.

Understanding that we all have different requirements and needs, the strengths or weaknesses of the streamers measure IMO in the following departments:

  1. User interface ease of use and stability

  2. Streaming services offered , connections etc.

  3. Sound quality

The numbering priority has a significance for me.

So here are a few rhetorical questions.

How much of use to me is a streamer that is not stable with frequent dropouts and I have to reset it every once in a while?

How much of use is a streamer that has a buggy user interface.

How much of use is a streamer that doesn’t offer the streaming services that I normally use?

The answer for me on these questions is “None”.

Regarding the MXN10, its user interface is very simplistic and doesn’t offer much in the settings department as the Wiim Ultra let alone the Eversolo which is in another level. But it is so quick, stable and easy that it is a joy to use.

It offers all the streaming services I can imagine, I have a subscription to Tidal for me (Tidal Connect), a subscription to Apple Music which my wife prefers (Airplay) and a subscription to Spotify that I want to get rid off but my son won’t let me (Spotify Connect). And of course a seemingly myriad of Radio stations.

Regarding its sound I would describe it as “plain vanilla” which of course means nothing to you but to me it means a sound that is never offensive and always plays on the safe side. It doesn’t wow you with its dynamics or the detail unearthing nor with its resolving abilities especially in classical music content, but it’s ok.

The Silent Angel streamer that I used for almost a year had a formidable sound to my ears but that thing refused to play continuously for more than 3 hours and had excessively frequent dropouts.

The Eversolo was way too analytical to my ears and tastes while the Wiim followed it closely.

I have a feeling that we as audiophiles are in a predicament, on one hand we have the companies that excel in software development but leave a lot to be desired in the sound department and on the other hand we have companies that offer great sound but their software and UI is a little bit lacking.

I may be wrong but that’s my take on it.

I bought one back in April to provide a stream to a tube Amp I was trialing against my existing Naim kit. The software is much simpler than the Naim but is really well thought out and as I use Roon, the lack of screen isn’t a problem. Is it good? YES! Is it as good as the NDX2 I owned at the time? Well I no longer own the NDX2 and XPS dr anymore and don’t miss them one little bit.

My tuppence.
