Cambridge Evo threat to Uniti range?

I think its a case of connectivity/features vs type of sound. Which is more important to the general music lover; if its the former than Naim maybe worried however if it is the latter than not so much as Naim has always pioneered their particular way of presenting music which has always attracted followers (even though the sound has evolved to a more modern presentation). In the past Naim had other tough competitors such as the Moon Audio Ace, which had it all in features, connectivity, Dac quality and a presentation of sound that enticed all reviewers around the world, all at a reasonable price. Its only 50 watts x 8ohms however HiFi Choice did a review of this ACE driving ATC SCM40 speakers so this Ace reminded me of Naim amps where the power out put quote may not turn heads but are capable of driving slightly more difficult speakers. Yet I think Naim survived the competition.

Good to see that both companies’ apps get the thumbs up.

The Naim app had its fair share of detractors when the new Uniti range first came out. It’s testament to Naim’s hard work that the app is now regularly referred to as one of the most robsut “in house” apps available when reivews are published.

Continuing to talk to Apple

Hi Clare, could i ask, as manufacturer, how you approach Apple? Do they have a licensing department to ask or do you have Tim Cook on speed dal?

Our software people talk to their software people - once you are a certified partner (which we are for AirPlay) you have contacts

I’ve heard Tim Cook plays hard ball. “I know you want Apple Music. But I want a Solstice. You know you’ve got a few spare ….”

A while earlier on this thread I read about HDMI problems with the Atom. Is this issue resolved?

I have a Nova based system in the living room but I’m looking at the possibility of an Atom in the den downstairs - with the TV playing sound through the Atom. I don’t to much action movies or any games so those multi-Chanel sound effects and not a key interest. But a reliable HDMI connection definitely is.

TIA for any update on this.

Reliable HDMI ARC performance seems to be an issue of constantly moving goalposts in my experience with an Atom. It often works reliably, but sometimes it won’t work at all, or certain features won’t work as expected. I suspect this may have something to do with automatic TV firmware updates. A more reliable fallback is to use an optical connection, which doesn’t have the same convenience but seems to just work.

No.

Although as @ChrisSU stated, it is often unclear which device is at fault. It’s a shame! I had rock solid performance via hdmi arc for 6+ months then it fell apart after the last uniti software update.

I use the optical also.

Agree with @ChrisSU here. Handshake problems will exist as long we have hdmi connections on our equipment. Unfortunately. I also use an optical connection between my TV and the Atom without any issues at all. And it sounds great.

I’ve just swapped my second system Qute for an Atom and was planning to swap the optical connection to the TV to an HDMI one - perhaps I won’t bother!
My wife’s only complaint about the switch is that it takes much more effort to switch to the TV input on the Atom - the Qute had a specific button on the remote control. Is there a way to set up a similar short-cut? Can an input be marked as a Favourite?

If your TV and the Atom work together it will actually make things easier as it will auto switch if the setting is selected. This is very convenient. My family loved it when I got mine as there was nothing else that needed to be done than turn on the TV. The TV remote will even operate the volume on the Atom. That’s if (AND A BIG IF) it works as it should. Give it a shot.

As I said previously mine worked well for a while until the last update. I am hanging out for the next update in the hope that it works again.

If you disable all the unused inputs it’s just a case of pressing the input button a couple of times to cycle through the active ones. Beyond that you cannot assign specific buttons. When we had a 272 you could do what you are looking for but with the NDX2 you can’t.

Optical generally works well on my Nova as well, although i do get a bit of clock drift after longer periods of time. I might have to run this by the Naim devs some time for consideration…

I’ve recently read reports, that sometimes the HDMI cable might make a difference as well…
… though after a change after firmware update, I’d expect some software issue.
