Can I get my n-Sub fixed?

My n-Sub has developed a fault. It’s gone very quiet. Still seems to be working but not producing much volume. Naim tell me they no longer offer any form of service or repair work on n-Subs because they don’t have parts. Class A Audio says the same.

I got a quote of £168 from a website called getitfixed for “power supply smps stage circuit repair” which they say is a common fault on this unit. They also say they have most parts in stock.

Anyone have any experience of going through this site? Or any other recommendations for n-Sub repair? All advice much appreciated.

Happy to be corrected, but I thought the n-Sub just had a linear PSU, rather than a staged SMPS ( SMPS for standby, Linear for normal operation) which came with the later products ?

I would be careful using them, if they consider SMPS failure to be a common fault with the nSub.
It’s a toroidal arrangement.

I fixed one of mine recently, although mine had a bridge rectifier popping fuses!

Since Naim no longer provides service for n-Subs, it is crucial to know if the parts used by getitfixed are genuine and not unofficial replacements.

Looking at the getitfixed website, they seem to cover a very wide range of products. I’m sure they can fix lots of things, but given their reply to your original query, it looks like a bit of generic response rather than a knowledge of the Naim n-Sub product.

There are specialists around – I would either ask a question on Pink Fish which may get you some recommendations, or enquire with Darran at Class A servicing who may be able to suggest someone suitable, as I don’t think he fixes these.

Surely if official parts aren’t available, other parts are better than a dead unit as long as sound quality not materially affected?

Flagging thus to @Richard.Dane as I’m not sure where the line is drawn in discussing this in respect of a product no longer supported, given that unauthorised parts could be considered to be modifications.

I think if it’s no longer factory supported then any repairs will be a modification of a sort, but if that’s all that can be done… Obviously as far as discussion though, forum rules will still apply.
