I own a CD5XS and am wondering for the longevity of the laser LED if it lights up when the CD draw is closed? Or does it only activate when the CD is spinning?
I ask this question as I leave all my components on 24/7.
Lasers in all mechs only activate in three conditions:
During data read (or write for writable drives).
During TOC read. A disc is detected and the mechanism with briefly spin the disc and activate the later to read the TOC and then both laser and spindle will quiesce.
When a draw close event is detected (triggered by a mechanical switch on drawer close). The clamp will try to engage and some mechanisms will also briefly activate the laser as part of the disc present test. If non is found they quiesce, otherwise they move to TOC reading (see above).
I think Martin is suggesting that it’s a question perhaps best answered by Naim support.
FWIW, I think that apart from looking to see whether a disc is present when the magnetic switch is triggered as you close the door, the laser is not activated when not playing.
