Chord GroundARAY - brilliant or bollocks?

Good point @james_n. I’d not thought about that!

Duhhhh…

I’d be careful about plugging one of these things into a DIN socket on the SCDR. The L/R audio signals on the DIN connectors are all commoned together with the audio input from the burndy. If these GroundARAY devices internally short the audio signal pins to ground (which is fine for an unused input) you’ll be shorting the outputs from the 252 to ground.

Thanks @AllenP.
Duly noted - I didn’t know that about the SCDR. Nor do Chord by the sound of it (hmmm…not sure if pun intended or not!)

I would expect that Chord knows all about Naim though. A bit odd

I’ve been using a 5pin Chord ground array into my 552 since this morning. I do have others but I am restricting use until I get a clear picture of what’s going on.

My initial reaction is a bit mixed. There’s definitely a difference but I haven’t been able to clearly understand if it’s actually better. With the array there seems to be an increase in high level information and micro dynamics and an increased tautness to the sound. However, this comes at a cost as it seems to rob the body of the music of some weight and richness. This benefits some tracks but not all. At least it’s dead easy to put in and remove.

I’ll update my findings after I’ve spent more time experimenting.

Chord probably know only the ground is connected to the ground array.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the technical stuff I am a complete numpty. I don’t really understand the ground stuff with Naim. I read the words, but…what I have that passes for a brain sees only the words. No comprehension of what they really mean beyond the very simple - ie I think Naim uses one box as the ground for all but I only know this because I read it in a thread.

I didn’t do well in maths or the sciences at school!

These should be in stock in NZ in about 6 weeks, assuming freight is running with the big lockdown in Auckland. Will look at trying one on the 252. Has anyone tried one on a NDX2?

spent a few hours yesterday, in my system the best results

1 x 5 Pin into Tuner on 252
1 x USB into QNAP (one of the free USB sockets at rear)

My deck is away at the moment having keel fitted, so NDX only

the x 2 GroundARAY bring more warmth, detail and focus to the music IMO - there has been a real uplift in the NDX since I have fitted them so more music and detail for me is a real plus

Detail?

Yep that too

Richard, is there any possibility that the Chord TT MScaler thread will be reinstated, even if closed and possibly with a recent chunk of posts deleted? I ask because it contained an a lot of very interesting and valuable information about sources and factors affecting them, an not just Chord products or directly relating to them, and it would be a pity for it to all be lost just because the thread ended up going the way it did. From numbers of other posts in this thread it is clear that quite a few others thought much the same.

I’ve had several of the Chord Ground Arrays for over a week now. I’ve tried them in my 552, N-Dac and Bluenode. My conclusion is similar to my earlier posting, I can confirm there is definitely a subtle change to the sound. However, I don’t particularly like the musical changes that each of them makes. Running more than one seems to compound the effect.

My initial thoughts, when I first plugged one into my 552, was that I must have one. It introduced a lovely ‘finely etched’ quality to all the upper frequencies and gave everything a sort of nice open airiness. Plugging another into my N-Dac’s USB seemed to ramp up this effect.

After a few hours of listening and getting familiar with the changes I decided to start pulling them out. This is when I began to realise that in my system they were robbing the music of some midrange warmth, richness and life. It was like the ‘realism’ a Naim system can create had been turned down a notch or two.

A further week of testing didn’t really change my mind. They could add more of a ‘hi-fi’ effect to the sound, which no doubt some will/may prefer but in my system this is not what I’m looking for, so they are now back with my dealer.

Not brilliant or bollocks - just different, although not necessarily better!

OMMV.

I find the same thing with Chord cables - and those from several other high-end audiophile companies

Which ones do you mean, Michael? Chord make loads of different cables, from a few quid to ‘000’s, each quite different from each other.

Over the years, from Indigo to Tuned Aray and Music.

To those who ‘liked’ my post, I discovered a few days ago that it has been reinstated (closed). Thanks @Richard.Dane, much appreciated.

An email today from Ansuz announces their addition to this product space. Ansuz Sortz:

"As a termination plug for open input and output sockets, this innovative audio product has been designed to audibly reduce disturbing noise that infiltrates any audio component through the open input/output sockets or through the ground connection. The new Sortz are equipped with Ansuz’s spearheading technologies that ensure effective electrical grounding.

Ansuz Sortz are available in RCA, BNC and XLR configurations. Versions in USB and LAN will follow.

Effective Noise reduction by employing Ansuz technologies
Unfortunately, the open input and output sockets in HIFI electronic equipment are an inexhaustible source of unwanted, interfering noise. These sockets act like antennas for airborne radio frequency noise. This noise is picked up from the ground connection of any audio component (amplifier, etc.). Thus, the ground connection is one of the most critical sources for disturbing noise. Since all audio components are interconnected via their ground connection – this noise is bleeding into all the other audio components.

Ansuz Sortz have integrated two critical technologies – The Tesla coil technology which reduces the ability of any audio component to pick up disturbing noise, and the Anti Aerial resonance coil technology which significantly reduces the actual noise level."

I can only imagine the price

Bart - how is the speaker demo going?

No idea of price yet! I’ll email re the Titan 808’s.
