Christmas movies

Yes a Xmas movie’s theme centers around hope, innocence and miracles like It’s a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th st, not a megalomaniac who’s hell bent on annihilating NYC.

I always thought it was the triumph of good over evil that mattered … in a star wars-y kinda way. After all I don’t see many ‘true life’ depictions of the Christmas story coming out of Hollywood. Best you can hope for is a warm fuzzy feeling at the end of the movie

Probably my real favourite . I’m going soft in my old age

In that case, the DH movies count then (though I liked DH 1 more than 2 RIP Alan Rickman)

Oh don’t worry, I love Die Hard 1 and 2. Already watched #1 and probably will again at least once more before Christmas! Can’t forget Home Alone either. Classic although my kids think it’s too scary.

One of the best Christmas songs in it as well…

People have different families. My kids first watched Gremlins with they were 5 and 3. I wasn’t much older. My kids love Gremlins. Are terrified by The Dark Crystal and run from the room. So if your family can watch it, it’s a family movie.

I think a Christmas movie is any movie set at Xmas. Many a Xmas after my siblings had all made it to teens did we all sit down with Mum and watch Die Hard while the Turkey was roasting.

I’d be more concerned about the damage from Love Actually, setting the kids up for unrealistic expectations about how relationships work.

Lol, the dialogue on that one!

Ah, Dark Crystal, a poignant cult film that left a mark when I was a kid. You’re right, a Christmas movie is one that everyone enjoys when gathering for the holidays and leaves a trail of good memories.

Trading Places is a must IMO

@crispyduck if you ever get the chance to see Guy Masterson do his one man Christmas Carol, do go, It is really excellent. Thoroughly recommended. We have seen it four times so far, it’s becoming a bit of a tradition in our house

Yes, but only the 1947 original, please:

Mrs Ebor once bought the 1994 Dickie Attenborough version by mistake. We were not impressed.

Christmas films in our house include:

Nightmare before Christmas, though the youngest daughter still finds Mr Oogie-Boogie scary at the age of 20!

Edward Scissorhands - one of Danny Elfman’s finest scores.
