Classical guitar (and other genres)

i have been enjoying sean shibe’s recording of south american solo guitar music and realise that outside of a few of the usual suspects i know very little classical guitar music.
any suggestions of composers, performers or albums would be very much appreciated especially with your thoughts on the music.
the more left-field the better - so including jazz folk world… as long as it is instrumental and solo or small ensemble

I will point you to Samuel Moore, a classical Flamenco guitarist. He is an international award winner and is just recording his first solo album, released soon.

His YouTube channel has some mesmerising performances, and live he is incredible. He’s also a good friend of mine so I declare a conflict of interest!

A left field suggestion would be Christina Pluhar - L’Arpeggiata.

Baroque music arranged by Christina Pluhar, played on instruments of the Baroque period.

My favourite album is “Los Pájaros Perdidos (The South American Project)” South American traditional/folk music which was derived largely from Baroque. Played on baroque instruments.

There is a video on YouTube of this album performed live (somewhere).

This is probably my favourite track from the concert.

new to me - i can’t find on qobuz but that may be their wobbly search app - certainly lots of releases on spotify

thanks fatcat
one of my favorite groups - along with lautten compagney

Try Paco de Lucia. He was really a flamenco player, but crossed over into jazz, particularly with Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin. You could start with his double ‘best of’ album entitled Gold and if you’ve not investigated the Di Meola / McLaughlin trio albums, Friday Night in San Francisco is the place to start.

Left field again, but if you like acoustic guitar and the blues try Muireann Bradley. A young Irish lady who in my opinion is beyond brilliant playing old classic blues.

Classical music - Scotland’s very own David Russell.

I have a pretty large collection of classical guitar.

For Bach, I like Goren Sollscher.

These guys aren’t bad either.

I also have a lot of guitar transcriptions of Scarlatti. Here’s one of my favorite discs.

Also don’t overlook the lute. On that instrument, my favorite artist is Hopkinson Smith. And try Robert Barto playing Sylvia’s Leopold Weiss, a Bach contemporary and generally considered the greatest lautenist of his time.

Not to forget luthier Torres who built Tarrega’s guitar and worked on the refinement of the modern classical guitar.

Goren Sollscher…

That’s not a guitar that’s a harp!

thanks for suggestions everyone - some very interesting and beautiful music that i am working through slowly - i’ll throw in a suggestion of my own - anouar brahem - ok so its oud not guitar and jazz - well the ecm variant

I’d recommend listening to Ida Presti (and as a duo with her second husband Alexandre Lagoya). Richard Thompson (no mean guitar player himself!) included them on his BBC Private Passions episode. Playing as a duo with Alexandre, there’s something magical about the performance…

Paco De Lucia. Flamenco meets jazz meets classical.
