I have seen medieval books and manuscripts where the artist has been told what an animal looks like but clearly has never seen one. To similar effect.

My thoughts too. Giraffes maybe. Dragon legends.
Brontosaurus or indeed any dinosaur fossils were not found/recognised until the 19th century, iirc…
