Or should they be separately shelved?

Ideally you want all your components on separate shelves. If you can keep brains in one rack and the brawn in another even better.

It’s absolutely up to you, but the sound quality may well be less clear, you may get a buzz or hum (your ears will say yes/no in seconds), and eventually the rubbery feet may start to mark the top of the lower box (esp. if it gets pretty warm).
