I’m still looking for the right fit for my second system. Currently have a 300 DR, 282 Supercap, LP12 and YG Carmel 1’s. Just leaves something to be desired. I tried headphones, but it wasn’t a fit. I’m thinking of trying new/used speakers or switching gear up. Would like to add a streamer too. All of this would be s/h and would trade out my naim gear for with the exception of just the speakers.
For speakers all s/h: Focal Diablo, Linn Akudorik
System Change: Linn ADSM 1 with aktiv Akubarik’s, Aavik U280 with S180, D’Agostino Progression
Any other suggestions? I really like the idea of the Linn Aktiv system, keeps things real simple. Room is 10 feet wide, 15 feet deep.
You give no indication of what it is that you’re missing from your current, not inexpensive system. Hard to make meaningful suggestions without knowing what you hope to are looking for.
In non technical terms, just not a connection to the music. The speakers seem a bit too revealing and clinical which makes me thinks its the speakers. I just feel impatient listening. Like I’m trying to like what’s being reproduced instead of actually just enjoying it.
I’m using NACA5 speaker cable in this system. I have Chord Music in my main system. I’ve thought of the Kudos 606. Just cannot home demo anything where I live.
I’m close to that. I think I’m going to swap out my NAP 500 and 552 to this room and just see what they sound like on these YG’s. I’m certain the 300 DR can run the Wilson Sasha’s in my living room. My living room has really just become background music these days with so much going on with the kids as they get older.
Swapped in the 300 DR into the main system and is running the Wilson Sasha’s just beautifully! Plan to connect the 500 DR in the basement later and see if there is an improvement on the Carmels.
I have had my 500 DR and ND555 downstairs now for about a week. Improvement for sure on the Carmel’s. Next step is to move the 552 into the system and see how it does. I still seem to think these Carmel’s are on the bright side for my liking and in listening to some Dave Matthews Band live last night, seemed a bit fast. I am still thinking of trying Akubarik aktiv’s with an Akurate DSM to see what that sounds like and could move all the 500 gear back to the main system. Or try a different set of speakers. Magico S1MKII? I’m having fun though!
If the 552 sounds good downstairs then I think you might want to consider that in the original set up it’s the 282 that is your issue. The 300 really needs the 252 or 552.
Hi @Katmaimatt , I have read through all this short thread and, as usual, most of the posting are talking about moving different Naim amplification components besteen system. Nothing wrong with that approach per se.
Also I see you are considering Linn products. Again nothing wrong with that per say.
However, given that the second system is in the basement (?), you might want to try a different approach to the originally stated problem.
Do you use any room treatment?
If not could you mention how high the floor to ceiling dimension is, and what are the walls constructed of and lined with. And what other stuff is down in this basement room.
PS: I have used Naim products for many years, and just because they are not listed in my profile currently should not be taken as any particular comment.
To put it mildly.
They managed to make me avoid the brand, now for more than two decades, with zero intention to explore their current offerings - no matter how good performing.
I suspect the problem is the basement room acoustics. If so, no change of equipment (other than, maybe, Linn’s “space optimization”) will solve your issues.
I’ve no idea what any of your kit sounds like, but in my experience speakers are the component that most affect the character of sound and are the hardest part to get right, so I would look there. Nothing to do with revealing or not, just character
Thanks everyone. I moved all of my 500 gear to this room and it made a huge improvement to the YGs I have. It still is bright and i suspect now that it is the speakers. I don’t think it’s the room as it is pretty dead with short ceilings and about 11 feet wide by 15 feet long. The Carmel’s are a good size for the room and could probably stay in that size to try something different. Magico S1 mark II?
