Has anyone here any idea what the cost of replacing the digital streaming board in a Nova might be? The unit is out of warranty and to make matters worse I am located in Australia. Authorised repair peeps here say unit will have to go back to UK.
The only repair is an authorised one. But Iām surprised the Australian distributor says it must be done in the UK. But if they say that, itās really your only option. Who are you contacting as your āauthorised peepsā ?
They should be able to get an accurate estimate though from Naim.
Iām keen to follow along and see what happens with this repair. I am also in Australia and have been worrying about the same issue.
I recommended a Nova to a friend of mine a few years back. His Nova developed the same fault as yours after a few months of use. Luckily it was in warranty. It took almost 6 months and then the distributor ended up sending a new Nova instead of repairing because I kicked up a stink about how long it was taking. I donāt know what took so long but they had issues getting the board sent over for some reason. I know that the wrong one was sent on one occasion. Iām not sure on the cost the board sorry.
The repair agent said he wouldnāt take one on again because it looked bad on his business.
Please keep us posted on how you go. If it doesnāt go well Iāll be selling mine.
JLS Electronics who claim they are authorised repair but also in dialogue now with Weston the new distributor. JLS claim they cannot get the part from Naim and that they do not have the āconfiguration toolsā required to program the Board for the unit because Naim have not/will not release this to Australia. I have no idea what most of that means and the efficacy, hence contact with Weston for some clarification.
There is some software that was hacked together to add the google token, and thatās not something that can be easily replicated elsewhere. So can only be done in Salisbury to make the unit fully functional. I very much doubt that software has been improved since I left.
Wow! Thats not good news for unity owners in Australia.
I am a bit surprised they cannot ship pre-staged units though with the configuration done at Naim and then re-boxed for use in repairs. Perhaps there is a technical reason why but I cannot imagine what it is. It seems āoddā.
Maybe it has to be tethered to the specific unit. So it canāt be used elsewhere.
Indeed. Tethered to the UUID or similar. Might also be non technical like a license export restriction that requires them to only ship things with certain third party software in them as part of a whole and complete product.
Hmm. When I spoke to the Westan service agents in my town here in New Zealand about an issue I had with my Star, they had a Nova in for repair and they had an order in with Naim for the streaming board that they were then going to install. I think the board was around $800 plus a few hours labour.
I think you just need to go through a Westan service agent.
@Silversurfer any updates on your issue?
Still in progress but the update is the unit does have to be returned to NAIM in UK for repair. It appears NAIM will foot the bill as it is their fault the unit cannot be repaired outside of the UK due to the licensing issue mentioned above. Distributor, local service agent and NAIM have all now stepped up to the plate although why it has taken several weeks to get this far is anyoneās guess. However, itās not over until the unit is back in front of me and working. We shall seeā¦.
Thanks for the update. Well at least you know what the process is now. Hopefully they get it sorted fairly quickly. Which repair agent did you use?
This is very interesting, I am in Australia and have had the exact same issue. I have been dealing with Westan since maybe February when they advised there had been a delay in receiving the repair tool and they were hopeful this would now be in Australia sometime in April. Nothing since. I have followed up again today.
