Country Joe McDonald from Country Joe and the Fish died yesterday. His was one of the more memorable performances at Woodstock, with one of the legendary anti-war songs. This is what he’s best remembered for, but he had a good career writing some excellent folk-rock songs. I saw him once about 20 years ago, and it was a great set. A lot of fine music and the fun of responding to the “Fish cheer”.
Country Joe and the Fish were one of the best San Francisco bands of the late Sixties and their first two albums were outstanding. Most of their songs were of course written by McDonald. Here’s the Guardian obit.
I love the first two albums and also “Here I Go Again” which has some excellent guitar from Barry Melton. I saw them in Sept 69 at The Royal Albert Hall when “HIGA” was their current album, CJ played an acoustic country set midway through their set. Sometime in the late 90’s or early 2000’s he played The Borderline in London as a solo act. As a surprise to us and himself “The Bevis Frond” joined him on a clutch of the electric classics, he seemed genuinely elated at the chance to play with a band again.
