This is getting frustrating
Rizwan is piling on the runs & is at 51
Abbas at the other end has been in for 45 mins & scored 0
213 for 8

9 down and bad light again. Curious situation where both sides actually want to play just as much, but the rules don’t allow it.
Surely if the light meter reading dips below the threshold it should be put to the Captains and say both wished to continue play should go on. If one or other chooses to go off then OK that is it.
If the morning session is an hour or less lunch should be only twenty minutes, and timed to ensure the likeliest chance of a period of continuous play before or after the break.
Grrrr

Not sure about our tactics. Field spread on a seaming wicket, ball swinging all over the place with only two wickets required?
Bruce - I’m Ok with light meters and taking a setting which becomes a threshold test for the match. I respect what you say re the captains’ views being sought but that, as history shows, can lead to some unfair scenarios emerging.
What I fail to understand though is why the standing umps at the square didn’t have a meter in their pockets. By the same token, why don’t they put a new ball in a pocket for the session when it’s available. Time was an ump’s coat had many and various useful items…and they ain’t holding caps and jumpers at this time.
I’m wondering what ump’s in the middle now do save LBWs and telling players about running down the wicket, as many of the legacy duties of patrolling run-outs, looking for no-balls and even LBWs are often determined via the tech now involved, obviously in the case of no-balls this is the 3rd-ump in this series (I suspect this decision driven by the likes of Sky highlighting how many were being missed).
So many ways that time is lost. Drinks taken, then two overs left the batsman calls for new gloves etc.
Physios should bring out a new helmet at the same time as doing an Hi assessment. If any injury break is too long the umpire should insist they retire hurt and send the next man on etc.

Barcelona 2 Bayern Munich 8
I assume that must be a cricket score
Good news, the Aus limited over tour of England is to go ahead. Looking forward to long nights and close games.
Pete - yes indeed. I just hope the weather plays ball, as today’s f/cast for Southampton isn’t looking clever, with ~50% chance of rain during most of the playing hours.
The temp has subsided (thankfully) from >30 to ~22.
Let’s hope we get some good cricket. As for the heat, it’ll only be a few weeks and you guys will be back a maximums of 12c. I’d make the most you of it, I’m certainly looking forward to the warmer months.
Are we going to get any play today?
Maybe, WX is for sunny periods & 21’C this afternoon
Pete, sadly only just before your bedtime (or some way after) by the looks of the forecast and wicket inspections.
I’m glad England didn’t bat first in this game…it could have been interesting!
I like bowlers like Abbas who bowl off/4th stump. I think the English bowlers should look at him and ask why bowling 5th stump and wider (as they often do) is their usual m.o…
'ere we go, WX sez sunshine until 19:00 & 21’C as they come out.
1st ball’s a no ball, 12-1 after the first over.
Enough, I’m told I’m needed for chauffeur duties
Criterion for bad light should be one of significant danger to batsmen or fielders. The current interpretation is far too restrictive. It’s almost as if the negligence lawyers are insisting on almost any risk being avoided to minimise the chance of a damages claim big enough to bankrupt the ICC . Meanwhile the cricket audience erodes and the sport is diminished.
Watch out you blokes. The Aussies get on a plane this weekend bound for the UK.
Would that be to play the reigning ICC ODI World Champions?
Bruce
The one time (and not without controversy) winners, yes I think it is.
Pete: if you ever come to the UK I think we should meet up and go the cricket. We’d have such a laugh!
Right now I’d be lucky to get out of my state, Mrs Pete and I are going to aim for the next Ashes. Hopefully things would have return to normal.
Well no spectators allowed here yet anyway.
