Michael Vaughan was saying that what disturbed him about the Harry Brook incident was “If this happened what else happened , that we don’t know about?”
He did not raise his voice the other night , and sat next to Adam Gilchrist you could feel his embarrassment and anger
A former distinguished England captain did not have a single good word to say about the England team
In comparison to the England cricket team which is hard to say a good word about , one of the all time greats of women’s cricket announced her retirement
I don’t suppose we will ever learn about what happened on tour. The higher ups consider it’s not of public interest. I hope I’m wrong.
I feel that there is a lack of accountability, it applies across all sports where the use of public money is not explained. Some will say that is the strength of the county system; but membership accountability is waning, largely due to poor finances and private sector investment.
I would like to see an an overhaul of the sector. But don’t hold your breath.
Public money? According to the ECB website 75% of their income is from broadcast rights and the rest from sponsorship, ticket sales and other commercial activities.
Not overlooking the massive dollop from the sale of The 100 franchises which, IMV, has now left the owning white-ball foxes in charge of the English cricket chicken coop. Yes, the distributed monies may provide comfort in the short term to many of the embattled counties, but then what?
Well, the ECB and counties couldn’t provide adequate investment for The 100, so they really had no choice, sad to say. I can see the commercial logic in pocketing £’millions via surrendering commercial & operational rights et al, especially when such future incomes are all based off forecasts and projections. Per original media and ECB newsflows, I don’t think this scenario was ever envisaged, more of a Plan D, it’s just that The 100 was shackled by Covid and the emergence of so many other T20 competitions, some of which overlap.
It’s a bit of a runt in the international litter of ‘T20’ competitions IMHO….will be interesting to see how the new franchise owners play things out, especially given the Indian investors/operators.
I wonder if it’ll morph to a T20 IPL format, so overseas viewers can follow it!!
There is a decline in counties being membership organisations; perhaps it was inevitable in the professional era. However small, there is public money in the game. However, there is inadequate accountability in sporting sector, perhaps because of so called commercially sensitive information. It is time this excuse was exposed as a sham in a sporting context.
I have been heavily involved with campaigning on a sports pitch .
We need more state school involvement , one of our former church wardens taught at a major public school. He taught three Hampshire Captains and a President Of The MCC.
Same school has produced one leading member of the current England Women’s Team
A lot of state schools have had their playing fields sold .
When I first read the headline “ Brook Apologises etc” I assumed it was about shot selection and rubbish cricket etc. Not about being hit by a bouncer Lol.
Also today watched a bit of England U19 ODI cup match. Batting at 5 England have Caleb Falconer, which I thought was a make of Loudspeaker.
It has taken Brook 2 weeks or more since the story broke to say this and sounded to me like ‘I am sorry I got caught’. No mention of his own Ashes performance whatsoever, only that regarding the ODI the next day he did not think it affected his cricket (he scored 6 I believe). Also he thought he may be sacked as white ball captain but never considered resigning.
Not much of an apology or honest reflection if you ask me. Still, my expectations were low.
