DAC-V1 and Win 11

I wondered if anyone had any experience of configuring a DACA-V1 for use with Windows 11. I adapted the configuration notes that the company publishes for earlier versions and I can get music playing. Sadly I am getting low level random popping noises that I don’t get with my older Win10 machine. I have tried the obvious things like increasing buffer sizes, turning off wi fi… but with no luck

I was hoping somebody else might have been on this journey since Microsoft has decreed that we all need to buy new machines to support their software.

Many thanks in advance
Colin

Doesn’t it depend on the playback software you are using?
Eg roon, no setup changes are necessary.
Jriver - I have a setup guide from Naim, also another from dcs.
Do you have the bitperfect test files?
it’s all linked here:

from that you can see wasapi event style is favoured.

Thanks, I stupidly forgot to say that I was using Jriver (MC32). I actually used the document you sent(thanks again), plus a similar document detailing how to configure windows (ASIO and control by the DAC). Sadly as the DAC is no longer supported there doesn’t seem to be a Windows 11 version. A lot of its the same as Win 10, but not 100%.

I’ve never had any problems with win 10 so was looking for some ideas maybe from someone who has done it before me

I normally use the DAC-V1 with Linux but I switched it over to an Intel NUC that is running Win11. I do get drop-outs with DSD files but PCM ones seem to play fine.
I will investigate the DSD to DoP issue, but my DAC-V1 display is failing!
I run Jriver MC 30 & MC 33

Checking the USB driver being used in WIN 11 for the DAC-V1 showed a generic one. I re-installed the NAIM Win (7/8) driver and it seems to work fine now.

Thanks that’s really useful, I’ll try check out the drivers tomorrow. Appreciate your help and the work you put into this.

I did check out the drivers and I was using the Naim driver. However I noticed that I was not getting the usual multi-second delay when I stop a track via Gizmo. As the delay was set in the DAC (via its buffer) the implication was that the system is not working in asynchronous USB mode. For a quick and dirty I set a 250microsecond delay in JRiver and that largely cured the issue. So it looks like the problem is buffering and tomorrow I’ll try to get to asynch mode to work.
Incidentally I checked with Naim support and was told that they ‘do not support Win11 on the DAC-v1 and it may be incompatible’ Sounds like a rock and a hard place I’m afraid

Mine (Win 11 Home 64bit ) seems to work okay with the old NAIM driver. If all fails you can uninstall and try re-installing the driver.

Sorry for not replying to your suggestion- holiday got in the way. I tried your fix and sadly it didn’t fix the problem. However by sheer fluke I got there; the other evening I forgot to plug in the power to my laptop and the pops disappeared. I have tried it a second time in this configuration so its down the the power supply I guess. I’ve ordered some appropriate ferrites to filter the supply output so fingers crossed :-). Thanks again for your very useful suggestions.

It is great that you made progress. I have several laptops- all HPs. I have two Intel NUCs (seventh gen Pentium and i7). I have two other servers (Intel i9 10th and 13th gen) these have good DIY power supplies. I found the SQ via DAC-V1 to improve with both CPU performance on the NUCs and servers and also with the power supply quality the i7 NUC being the sweet spot (it came with a very decent power adapter!). They give better SQ (expansive soundscape, lower noise floor) than the older i7 HP Elite books that I own.
USB cables also affect the sound in my setups. I have a mix of affordable ones (Belkin Gold, Monoprice Monolith with an added ferrite, Oyaide D+ class A) and some boutique ones (Sablon2020 unpowered, Network Acoustics) that I use on different DACs but have tried on the DAC-V1. the Sablon being the fav with it perhaps. The differences are audible in my setups but are subtle enough that I could use any of those happily.
