The story of the death of The Strawbs frontman & driving force, Dave’s Cousins is now doing the rounds & looks to be confirmed. Apparently he had been ill for some time. Another sad loss of a great & unique talent and voice. RIP Dave and thank you for such memorable songs in such memorable times for me.
Sad news. I was listening to his latest album with a friend today unaware of his passing. A unique voice,
RIP. I never kept up with his output, but the Strawbs with him and Rick Wakeman were teenage favourites.
I’ll always remember sitting in my bedroom listening to the Strawbs and a one off live show. As others have said, a distinctive voice which transports me back to those times when I hear it. RIP.
Missed this news……what a unique voice, r.i.p
RIP Dave Cousins heard a 19 year old Sandy Denny and introduced her to The Strawbs. All Own Work was remastered in 2010
I recall seeing him and Willougby in Holland Park - I was spell bound by the acoustic set. Very sad news, but that’s my music for the day.
Very sad news indeed, I love the Strawbs.
I only ever saw them once, in the Half Moon, Putney, late 1980s.
I remember Dave being very a charismatic and witty frontman and the band were fantastic.
Fantastic Band.
I have seen them a few times over the years.
And Dave was a true gentleman.
Another sad loss
I discovered the Strawbs, probably like many, when at college in 1972 via the Part of the Union single.
Dave had the sort of voice that you couldn’t be indifferent to. You liked or loathed it.
I liked it a lot & have all the Strawbs albums upto Ghosts & still play them regularly. Many good tracks & good stories among them.
Even by rock star standards, I hadn’t realised that Dave was as old as he was, 85.
For those of us of a certain age, a little more of our world disappears.
RIP Dave & thanks for the many good memories.
totally agree on the voice ![]()
I have just remembered the last time I saw the Strawbs.
It was in Truro, 2010. The bill was supposed to be Wishbone Ash, Groundhogs & Focus. Groundhogs dropped out at the last minute due to Tony TS McPhee being ill. The Strawbs substituted at short notice & did a half hour all acoustic set. It was very good & the Cousins voice was very much on song.
I can’t recall who the other Strawbs were supporting Dave or how many of them there were. Perhaps only one or two?
Mine pre dates your’s by a couple of years CF. Strawbs were at the Stables, Wavendon in 2008. My wife was heavily pregnant at the time. The music was loud & my wife spent most of the concert with her hands across her tum trying to protect my unborn daughter’s ears - my wife always makes sure to remind me of this fact!
I still remember a gig at Exeter Uni where Al Stewart was supporting the Strawbs with recent recruit Rick Wakeman. We were having a pre gig pint or two in the bar beforehand with the band in the next booth. I’m afraid we didn’t pluck up the courage to speak to them but I do remember being most impressed by Mr Wakeman’s keyboard prowess and the song by Al Stewart about Nostradamus. I think this was 7th May 1971 and I can still remember it!!
I knew of the Strawbs from my school days, but it was not until a roommate played their albums a lot that I really enjoyed them. The link to Sandy Denny helped.
