Denafrips Venus 15th DAC vs Chord DACs?

I just noticed Denafrips have introduced new models. Pontus 15th, Venus 15th and Terminator 15th. Has anyone tried any of these DACs or compared them to the Chord Dave or TT2?

I don’t need any new DAC at the moment, in fact I currently have too many. I’m very happy with my trusty QBD76 but sometimes think about the Chord DAVE. However, even at used prices the DAVE is quite expensive. I am curious about the Venus 15th if it can offer something different.

I auditioned a number of DACs before settling on the TT2. Amongst all of them I was fortunate enough to hear a number of Denafrips DACs through a friend who is a dealer but had taken three on as part of some part ex deals.

Obviously they are quite different presentations and initially in quite subtle ways. For me though the decision was solely between the Terminator and the TT2. The others were very nice, may well be good enough, but the Terminator and TT2 were on an entirely different plain.

As ever one might suspect that the new ones will to some extent close that gap. Whether any of them do so to such an extent that they overtake the TT2 only you can judge.

The latest Denafrip DACs tend to get very good reviews online. Main problem for me is being able to demo a unit. The dealer network seems quite restrictive in UK. The main authorized dealer being in Bury St Edmunds. I’ll have to be content with enjoying the reviews for now.

I understand Denafrips seem to update their models quite frequently which probably means there may be some good second hand kit around.

I’m sure I read somewhere that the new Denafrips Venus 15th is actually the previous flagship Terminator 12th in everything but name.

Just been reading up and it looks like you’re right. Good spot.

The main disadvantage with most Chinese DACs is the manufacturer introduces changes in every 2 years if not earlier. When that happens the value of the equipment plummets, and the owner may have just lived with it for several months, barely warmed up. Unlike Chord DACs especially the DAVE, it has stood the test of time and held its value very well.

The Denafrips Venus 15th looks promising and time will tell if it’s a used DAVE or the Venus 15th.

I would stay with Chord. Look for a Mscaler and a 2qute DAC.

Qutest? The 2qute won’t work with Mscaler

R2R DACs offer a presentation that’s quite distinct from Chord DACs. It’s well worth hearing a well-executed R2R design in your own system. Many listeners describe them as having a more organic, analog-like character — with natural timbre, fluid dynamics, and an effortless quality that often feels more musical and emotionally engaging than the sterile precision some alternatives can convey.
