Do you use a Gates Belt Drive bike?

Does anyone Ride a bike that uses a belt drive?

I’m especially interested in the Gates CDX Belt drive that I have heard is the only one that works with mud.

Please let us know your experiences and whether it is much cheaper and better than a normal oiled chain For long-term commuter and fun ride use including fun riding on easy trails, but not Serious off Roading or downhill.

I have had 6 Harley Davidsons with belt drive since 2002 and covered around 90,000 miles on them without problem or any real need for lubrication or adjustment.

Thanks, Michael useful to know that.

A friend of mine and his son have both had about six years each on a pushbike with gates belt drive with no maintenance!

The big plus with a chin is that if it breaks you can fix things with a split link. With a belt you have to replace the whole thing, which requires removing the wheel etc. You can get split belts which hiold up well but are only supposed to be used as a temporary repair and obviously take up much more space in a tool kit. That said, it’s extremely rare for a belt to break.

Yes, but given that I ride my bike 99% in the town where I live near my house I don’t try to mend it if it breaks when I’m out unless it’s something very simple.

Sorry: I hadn’t clicked it was a pedal cycle! You should be fine!

Yes, Mrs DG and I have the Gates belt drive system on our Riese & Müller Nevo3 GT Vario GX electric bikes.

Can confirm that they work very well in the mud.

Gates are the top company for drive belts of many types. Gates make timing belts for Cosworth - recommendations don’t get better than this.
