DR Who- bad acting?

I decided to give Dr Who another try. Good storyline but the current Doctor just doesn’t have the depth required to portray the complexity of the titular character. The female Doctor Jody Whitaker seemed to be the same. Jo Martin seemed to have more depth but of course has only been a bit part player so far. The Doctor is a lost soul. lonely, angry at times, confused as to why he has been chosen to save the universe(s), happy to help but not knowing why.
Does the character of Dr Who demand a better, perhaps older actor with more life experience?

It went rubbish after Jon Pertwee. :zipper_mouth_face:

Pertwee was the reason I stopped watching it.

The powers that be (the show-runner) seem to want the character to be outgoing & frenetic, and exhibit certain credentials in the process (to pick a few words). Matt Smith mixed this up, underpinned by some great storylines e.g. the Graces & Vincent. Unfortunately, it’s now turned in to a shouting contest via Whittaker and the expanded cast, and onwards, with some very confused & silly writing/storylines if media reports are to be believed. Think preachathons.

It’s lost its way IMHO – I understand they’ve only shown around half of the BBC/Disney co-funded episodes which are in the can. There could be worse to come.

Ah, I forgot about the Disneyfication.

Unfortunately for us viewers, for the BBC and Disney the match is PC heaven.
The answer of course is do the same as cinema viewers are doing and vote with our feet, just stop watching it.

When it was good, it was great…compare to now. Actually, don’t.

William Hartnell was good, though on seeing again more recently I wasn’t as convinced as I had been as a 9 year old. I wasn’t over keen on Patrick Troughton - too fumbly, but Jon Pertwee was better. Tom Baker was superb - my favourite of all. Went downhill somewhat with Peter Davison & Colin Baker, and by Sylvester McCoy I stopped watching - but well resurrected with Christopher Eccleston, then David Tennant excellent. Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi OK but the writing was getting weird, then it all became too PC and "what moral story shall we portray this week?”, played by hammy actors, and I lost interest, unlikely to bother watching again.

Pertwee seemed to me to be playing it for children ( lol). Ecclestone had the depth I want from the sci fi character and was my favourite. He really brought it back and Billie Piper was the perfect companion.

Yes, Billie Piper played a great character, mg pervious favourite having been the Leela character with Tom Baker

I am a life long fan but the present Doctor is so poor he is making Jodi Whittaker’s Doctor look almost good. The disneyfication of the stories is dreadful.

I’d take the Pertwee Doctor and the story lines any day over what is happening now. I continue to watch in hope but it has been a slippery slope with uber important companion characters and Chris Chibnall’s sledgehammer destruction of the DR Cannon and back story. I’m not bitter though, not much!

I have spent a year watching all available episodes right from the beginning not so long ago completing them in time for the new Doctor. I enjoyed it but not so much the last couple of Doctors.

My favourite Doctors of the old era

Patrick Troughton (mainly because I enjoyed it much more after William Hartnell as a young child, some of the most scariest stories too)
Tom Baker
John Pertwee
Peter Davidson
Colin Baker
William Hartnell (more in retrospect as in viewing now he fumbles his lines too much and has to be supported by his companions a lot)
Silvester McCoy

New era Doctors

Matt Smith (he based some of his character on Patrick Troughton’s)
Peter Capaldi (underrated I think due to some poor story lines)
David Tennant (had some of the best modern era stories though)
Christopher Eccleston
Jodi Whittaker
Ncuti Gatwa

Such lists are of course a matter of personal choice but after watching them all back to back this is how it ended up for me. Paul McGann was OK but I do not really see him as a full on incarnation of the Doctor. He might have been good if he carried on over a series or two.

I can’t help but see Tristan Farnon.

I used to hide behind the sofa to watch it.

Mind you, haven’t watched it for years since Tom Baker, but based on the comments so far, that may have been a good thing.

In latest iteration, Ecclestone very good, Tennant very good, Smith good (though storylines were getting a little over thought and complex), Capaldi I couldn’t tell as the storylines were by now a bit wonk, the last two just awful, as is the whole production since Capaldi days. Now unbelievably tedious.

I don’t know why they were scared of daleks I used to shout run upstairs. :scream: :joy:

Oh dear, try not to think of any of the flying versions!

It’s OK though as the Achilles heel of the Daleks even though they are the finest killing emotionless machines in the universe is that they are completely stupid.

I must have gave up watching before they evolved to flying. :scream:
