End of my tether

Mike,

I’ve had a couple of my components serviced and DR’d and when they came back yes there was an improvement but prior to going away they were never giving the problems yours were.

I’ll stick with my view that it would at least be worth trying a different speaker but respect your position of course.

Regards,

Lindsay

I’d try something different. Unison S6 perhaps with your CD player and speakers.

Well I hope they are inspecting more closely today.

I wish Rega would have made more decks in vibrant colours. Today Sugden and Linn have gone down the same route

I think this is getting a bit silly now. And by that, I don’t mean you Mike.

I am as far from an expert as possible, but…

I just think it is time to uncable your whole system, take it down to your dealer, SET IT UP in his listening room and see if it sounds OK (forgive me if u have done this - it’s a long thread…). If so, it is something about your room/power supply. If not, it is a case of swapping each piece out to see who the culprit is.

I’d love to but I don’t drive; he’s 40 miles away and there’s a pandemic so the shop’s shut. Also though, I don’t see how it’s his boxes if theTV sound is great but CDP is not. That’s cables, room or source.

Right now, bigger concerns. Would be great to have consistent music reproduction during this but I’ll settle for the fact I can experiment with the sofa a but and maybe speaker position give. The impact new sofas may have had.

The note I think about it though the more I think CDP as TV sound is absolutely consistent but cd sound is not yet always used to be.

Another reason why I think the speaker argument is well meaning guff. People who’ve not heard them “deducing” but ignoring counter factual stuff.

Have regrettably had to set ignore on one user who, offered their considerable knowledge and then took umbrage at its rejecting because it made no sense and thus went for the jugular at a perfectly reasonable view I expressed on another thread (now closed).

Despite all your efforts, perhaps the Naim kit simply doesn’t ‘float your boat’, as it once did.

Perhaps time to try something completely different and if you don’t find anything that gives you what you are looking for, simply stick with what you’ve got and enjoy the sound it makes.

During these trying times, you’ll have plenty of time to play your existing Naim system and listen to lots of music.

Once the COVID-19 is over, you can check out other gear for a comparison (home demo etc) … I reckon you’ll stick with what you already have :grinning:… but equally, you may find something different that you prefer.

Do you have headphones you could try which would at least potentially identify whether or not the issue lies with the room/speakers?

Now why didn’t any of us think of that before !

Very good idea.

Mike ? Let’s just hope it’s the room … then all you’ll have to do is get rid of those sofas … !

I’ll get me coat …

The headphone will not identify a room or speakers match problem. However if the sound is enjoyable, the problem is certainly the room or the speakers match with the electronics and source.

Also dont forget that Mike is aging and his speakers when first purchased several years ago will sound different today.

I agree. Some years ago I could more easily accommodate myself with some minor brightness or edgyness.
But a bit older now, i can’t.
I will not be surprised to see myself buying an all tube electronic system in 10 years

Mike says that the system is inconsistent. Some music sounds terrific, as per the past, other music is disappointing.

So probably not entirely down to the passage of time.

Mike,

Perhaps the components in your system are all a little lightweight. (IE. They don’t add weight to the music, as say the 250/32.5 does).

I have amplifiers that are a lightweight, very fast and detailed. It doesn’t cause a problem because I use a Denon DL103, which adds plenty of weight. Previously I’ve used the Ndac and CDS2, which also add weight.

However, a couple of years ago I bought a Chord Mojo, this turned out to be a featherweight, some instruments sounded like toy instruments. Musically sounded awful.

At the moment I stream Tidal or Nas using a Squeezebox Touch. This sounds Ok, and it is pretty consistent, but sometimes the recordings are so poor (lacking in weight), the system tips over the edge and sounds pretty bad.

Maybe your system is on the brink. Good recording OK, poor recording tips it over the edge.

Hi Mike, sorry if I’ve missed these points in this post, so apologies in advance if they have already been dealt with, but over the 30 odd years I’ve been using Naim amps and now CD (via a Uniti 1), I’ve found that what the equipment and speakers are supported on has made a significant difference to PRAT and overall enjoyment of my system.

I recently managed to get Mana steel spikes for my Mana support frame - tighter and clearer sound.

Switched from aluminium to titanium Nordost pulsar points for my speakers. They made the Uniti sound so much better and completely cleared the comparatively boxed in sound I was hearing when I had to use the Uniti as a amplifier for a few months when my 250 was being DR’d.(This was at the beginning of the DR conversion process, I understand it takes less time now).

Hydra mains cable - I wasn’t prepared for the level of improvement this level of star earthing would bring to the sound.

Finally, I noticed this was mentioned earlier, but my aging hearing suddenly made a difference. Clearly this had been going on for over a year, if not longer, but it seemed that over the period of about a week, so quite suddenly to me, the balance swung so my system didn’t sound so good any more - lack of PRAT etc. Now got NHS digital hearing aids and all is well, if not better!

Again sorry if you have considered and dealt with all these possibilities beforehand.
Best wishes Amer

Best put this one to bed straight away then.

How is it proposed that I use headphones on a 202/200? There’s no headphone socket and my Headline went years ago.

Thank you for the other posts but they’ve been dealt with earlier in the thread.

Sorry - I am not familiar with the 202/200 being a humble Nova user and was not aware there was no headphone facility in your system.

It is a long thread.

Yep, even some of us who have been with it since the beginning, either forget, or overlook some of the details.

It’s a general problem in life, that when you seek help or advice, you wind up getting the help and advice that people are keen to give, which is not necessarily the same as the help and advice you were seeking :sunglasses:
