End of my tether

From 2008. Unserviced.

gallows humour?

It’s been covered earlier in the thread. It’s 18 years old and both my dealer and Naim would not recommend it make the journey.

I thought to have read 2008, so it’s 2002 . I understand much more.

2008 was when I purchased the 202, 200, HC and NAPSC. Easy to confuse oneself on such a long thread.

Yes, so can understand that your cdx2 is exhausted…
Ndx2 seems a wonderful choice :+1:

Did a dem more than a year ago. Came across the Innuos coincidentally as part of the same dem but it ticked a lot of boxes.

There’s no consensus on our household on the NDX2 as a CDX2 replacement. Mrs. H. wasn’t fully engaged until we heard some hi-res. I found it a tad clinical. That could be the speakers used by my dealer. So, the jury is out and there’s a lot of money to be saved first. However, we were unanimous on the Innuos. We’re having one of those before we even get an NDX2 (if we do).

Got a cd on the way so I may finally play some music this week.

But the Innuos needs a Dac. So which Dac would you connect to it?

Does it? They all rip serve and stream as far as I can see . Can run standalone and load music in then take everything up a level with an NDX2.

It can serve and rip, yes. But you need a Dac connected to it in spdif or usb, or a streamer ( with a Dac inside) like the Ndx2 to play in Upnp.
The Innuos is like a Unitserve or a Uniticore.
An Innuos alone can’t play music.

The Innuos Zen Mini is the only one with a DAC, the others, the Zen and Zenith don’t have a DAC

I checked, and I am surprised. Didn’t know that.
But the Zen mini, so apparently an all in one server/ ripper/ Dac costs 1k.
Do you think it can match the sound quality of the Cdx2?
It would be surprising.

This thread has been going for Six Months! Holy Moly. If this was me and my system had all these issues I’d have moved on months ago. Sell the old **** buy a newish SN2 and HiCap DR. Lots of pre loved units around. Since apparently you aren’t doing any streaming, yet, buy a good CD player and listen to some music. Then figure out what direction you want to go in. It’s really not freaking rocket science :rocket: I hate seeing you torture you’re self. Life really is too short, I speak from personal experience.

Mike - If the NDX2 doesn’t quite float your boat given you have an XPS2 have you considered a used NDS? It’s nowhere close to sounding clinical. Apologies if it’s been mentioned previously.

They are excellent value and given you seem to want to play local files the limitations of the older platform may not be an issue. The NDS is Naim’s second best streamer and a very fine source.

It’s worth waiting until one comes up that has been back to Naim for a new display which is the main concern with the legacy streamers. Mine was sealed back from the factory with a 1 year warranty and cost almost £2k less than an NDX2 and they are even cheaper now. I used it with an XPS DR for almost a year before moving up to a 555DR. It’s still a formidable source powered by the XPS.

Yes, I’m looking at the mini plus LPS as an interim step to an NDX2. It probably doesn’t match a CDX2 but it’s a useful stepping stone.

@trickydickie no I’d not considered an NDS but only because it didn’t really impress me that much on a dem a few years back. Always willing to have a rethink.

@opus to be honest I’d put you on my ignore list and I’m disappointed you’ve popped up again. Your posts are fairly aggressive; don’t show a great deal of regard for my personal feelings and tend to critique the person rather than the issue so, thanks for your views but no thanks.

I understand more the interim step. If you can find later a second hand Ndac, to connect to it, maybe you will find it close to the Cdx2.
Anyway, you will also be able to use later the Innuos as a very good nas, with a streamer like Ndx2.

Hi Mike

Yet another opinion. I sent my early 90’s CDI back for a service in December last year. It came back like new, cosmetic and SQ improvements were fabulous.

You have an intermittent problem so it could be poor connection/solder or component issues.

The service will probably cost less than you think and can only improve things. Only issue with return (apart from the obvious at the moment) is making sure you use the transit bolts. I don’t think the age of the CDP should prevent a service and from other threads many people seem to send back similar age kit.

Now the standard disclaimer, sorry if I missed something from the above 900

There is some merit in the idea of getting the CDX2 serviced given that it currently isn’t doing it for you and doesn’t figure in your plans. In that sense you have little to lose by sending it off. Presumably when it was new it did work for you in your system so if it could be restored you’re winning and if not you wouldn’t have lost much as you were getting rid anyway. The resale value will be enhanced if it’s freshly serviced so you’d get some of the servicing cost back if it still doesn’t float your boat…

Mike. My “new” CDS3 is from 2005 and Naim have quoted a price for a service with no warning about age issues. Send a quick message to them and see.

You mentioned you can cross off most potential problems such as speakers/room/power amp etc as you still get good SQ sometime and any electronic products are going to change over 18 years.

I suppose it could be the PS so you could run it without for awhile. Or it could be the 202 input. I believe you can hook up through the Tuner input for a trial. But don’t take my word for this, check with Naim or Mr Dane. ??

This must all have been covered before so sorry again. But the service issue looks a loose end and I am sure Naims service team will get back to you as soon as they can with a definitive answer.

No need to apologise sir.

Power supply went to my dealer to check out. This was because the CDX2 sounded better without it when the 202 was being serviced and I was loaned an integrated. Thanks to the lockdown it’s still there and won’t be coming back any time soon. However, the fact the CDX2 doesn’t sound right despite the return of the 202…

@Svetty my understanding of what I have to lose is that of it’s a mech/laser issue then the replacement has never been to my taste plus my dealer and others on here seemed to think the risk re: transit was too much given the age.

I’d be interested to see if others disagree as that’s been a line since the early days of this thread.
