Prevention is always better than cure, and I regard it as a matter of good housekeeping to ensure that devices around the house do not generate too much electrical noise. Modern LED lights (and CFLs) are often quite bad, as are the ever increasing number of cheap ‘wall wart’ switching supplies that power or charge devices all over the place.
Of course there is no guarantee that any of this noise will find its way into your HiFi and affect the sound, but selecting low noise devices or keeping things switched off can only help, as can keeping suspect devices, especially network hardware, physically distant, and preferably on a different mains circuit.
That is indeed one of the changes from Naim’s first generation streaming platform to the second generation - an improvement to the protection from Ethernet borne RFI.
As people have previously indicated: both.
Eliminate what you can, protect from what you can’t eliminate.
(Both with the caveat “As far as you can given economic constraints”.)
As @litemotiv pointed out, it’s impossible to completely eliminate RFI, as @Simon-in-Suffolk has previously pointed out it’s impossible to completely remove the coupling of RFI to other circuitry.
That looks more like a broadcast storm!
One question that remains perhaps is whether the EE8 actually removes more RFI / jitter from the signal when compared to a standard Netgear gs108 switch, as far as i know there is currently no evidence that it does.
So that is apart from the RFI issue in general, and the effect that noise and jitter potentially have on equipment.
Concept for a scene from an upcoming remake of “The Birds”?

As a person who actually owns the latest Linn Klimax DSM/3 AV with an EE8, I can say that I hear no SQ difference with or without the EE8. But then I only speak for myself, for my own system setup.
Interesting post, I demoed/purchased the EE8 when I had my (recently departed) NDS…
Just bypassed the EE8, and plugged the ethernet cable directly into the DSM/3…after 1 hr of periodically switching between the two…
Both internet radio and more so on higher res - local files or Qobuz, I preferred the direct cable vs EE8 …
On the NDS there was a very clear preference for the EE8…
Interesting hobby…more listening to do…
Interesting, more listening for me too!
This is why I still keep the EE8.
Not one for fiddling, I realised this morning that my headphone setup has a power supply (an Uptone LPS 1.2 that normally powers my UltraRendu) that could work with my EE8. After checking ratings and plug sizes and dropping the LPS output voltage to 5v, I gave it a go.
Interesting….
Detectorists! A man of discernment.
Actually i think this is the answer (from the same site):
They compare the EE8 (Bonn N8) to a standard Netgear switch and conclude both perform more or less the same:
Conclusion
Our measurements show that there is little difference between a standard switch and an audiophile version. The clock does not generate less jitter in the streamers. The spectral analysis also shows that there is not so much less ‘noise’ coming from the spdif outputs.
Indeed. We enjoyed it so much the first time, we’ve started watching the entire series again.
To be fair here it’s important to point out that you have missed off the final sentence from the conclusion, which says;
Our measurements show that there is little difference between a standard switch and an audiophile version. The clock does not generate less jitter ín the streamers. The spectral analysis also shows that there is not so much less ‘noise’ coming from the spdif outputs. Tricky. Know, however, that this is not a listening test… that’s coming. And only then can we really draw conclusions. To be continued!
They only conclude that the measurements show little difference. So to say that they conclude that the switches perform the same is not correct. At least not yet, or maybe not at all…
I was only quoting the part that was relevant to the question i posed:
The subjective listening tests are another area, in which i didn’t want to stray with the risk of running into “blind testing” discussions. ![]()
I have an Uptone JS-2 PS that powered my Roon Nucleus plus my EE8. IMO, it’s the best of the Linear power supplies.
I replaced my EE8 with an Ansuz PowerSwitch which performs multiple functions.
…good interesting!?
Do tell more….?
Unfortunately it’s good interesting.
Will leave it a few days and then switch back to the standard EE supply just to confirm my findings
If measurements solely would be the judge of audio performance then 90% of the audio equipment out there would be thought of as “they are the same”. I’m very happy that the guys with a probe don’t decide what is good or bad because what they love the most is…a probe.
