Epic (in length) tracks; tell us about your favourite

I hung in there for one more album Coney Island Baby then it was a long period of mediocrity until New York.

I dunno. Street Hassle was half a decent album & I liked The Bells.

Loan Me A Dime (13.03) is a tremendous track which slowly builds, aided by Duane Allman.

If you’ve not listened to ‘Feng Shui’ by the Ozric Tentacles, you’re missing out on a 10 minute epic. Once you’ve played that, go for Jurassic Shift off the same album too!

Cortez The Killer - Built To Spill live is excellent all 20 minutes of it.

The Blue Mask was pretty good too.

I have just listened to side 1 of Metal Machine Music……

@Pete_the_painter would agree with you.

There is an interesting story about that piano - Despite being retuned the piano still had stuck notes so KJ improvised around its limitations.
I recommend listening to Tim Harford’s explanation in cautionary tales:

Another choice would be Sibelius’ 7th symphony; it was conceived as a three movement piece but he turned it into a single movement of around 22 minutes.

Sibelius 7. Listen on headphones with your eyes closed. An almost religious experience (and I’m not religious).

Steve Hillage - Rainbow Dome Musick (either side, but personally, I prefer side 1 - “Garden of Paradise”.
Terry Riley - Rainbow in Curved Air

A lot of Tool songs could fall under this list, but one of my favorites from 10,000 days: Vicarious

I wandered into a bar on Michigan Avenue in Chicago when on a brief stopover and noticed they had a lot of Grateful Dead on the jukebox. The barman yelled over put “Eyes of the World” on - it’s a 32 minute version!
Turns out I had stumbled into the local Deadheads’ hangout and as an English Deadhead I was treated like royalty. When I said I needed to eat, they just said stay here and we’ll dial out for a meal so the Music Never Stopped.

OK here’s an oddity. Ian Jones of Karnataka put together a “prog” project a couple of years ago called Chasing The Monsoon, resulting in a ten track album “No Ordinary World”. A damn fine album in its own right, but on the CtM website Ian stated that that it was intended to be a continuous piece. So eventually, it was released as a single file 60 minute 24-96 download.

More of a suite than one long piece (such as, say, Thick as a Brick), but by running the tracks together, it works better than separates.

Damn, I really like this!

Cheers,

Playing some Yes this evening I remembered this thread. A surprising number of their tracks are just sub-10 min, and I know Close to the edge has already been mentioned, but these stand out:

Heart of the Sunrise from Fragile (11’29”),

America bonus track on my downloaded 24/192 copy of Fragile (10’34”)

Ritual/Nous sommes du soleil - my favourite track on Tales from Topographic Oceans (21’38”)
