Epic (in length) tracks; tell us about your favourite

Don’t know the Glastonbury recording but also from the 90’s is the superb double cd "1998, Live at the Star Club, Oberhausen"celebrating their 50th Anniversary, many lengthy versions of classic tracks, line up has Phil Ryan back on keyboards after 20yr absence. Quality of recording is very good.
Difficult to find now though, may only have been available at gigs or direct from band

I’m just spinning my vinyl copy of J-M Jarre’s Magnetic Fields. I haven’t listened to this album for ages but loved it back in the day and would play it on my Sony PSX800 as I fell asleep in bed. I have to admit that Les Chants Magnetiques no. 1 which spans the whole of side 1 and lasts over 17 minutes, certainly qualifies as epic on all counts!

So many examples possible mostly in progressive rock….

Transatlantic was already mentioned. The Whirlwind while cut in tracks is in principle one song in an album
From Sylvan The epic track Artificial Paradise.
From Deep Purple - Space Trucking
Cream - Toad

Even more epic and also impressive is this song and album of Green Carnation, the artist reflect on losing a child, absolutely recommended emotional stuff…… 1 hour of intense beauty…

Many versions of My Favorite Things, up to about 25 minutes…

And it’s on yootoob. So that’s tomorrow’s listening sorted!

Agree. Waiting for Cousteau is my favorit single track by Jarre. Those 47 minutes just doesn’t get boring. It is not a lot of variation, but still - not boring. He has found the right sound of it. It just floats in the air, creates a mood.

Also (don’t know if it really qualifies , though): Mahler - symphony no 8, second movement (about 1 hour). I’m not listening to it very often, but…

Sonic Youth’s The Diamond Sea ticks in at 25 minutes and is a clear favorite chez moi. I play it often.

There is a live recording by The Velvet Underground on The Quinne Tapes of Sister Ray that is 38 minutes long, but not a second too long. There is also a 29 minute and a 24 minute version of the same song that are not far behind in enjoyment.

Went to a live performance of this work. It was quite an experience. The musicians where placed on the balcony surrounding the audience for a very immersive experience.

Led Zeppelin’s concert version of Dazed and Confused on the album The Song Remains the Same from 1976 must be mentioned in an epic context, 26:53, among the longest of its time.

Dream Sequence (live) from Flowers of Evil by Mountain at around 24 minutes.

A good concert too watch on youtube is the April 1975 Rockpalast gig for german TV just prior to UK tour which led to the Maximum Darkness live album, sadly John Cippolina only played on the UK tour so no footage of those gigs afaik.

Can also recommend exploring the music of Help Yourself, closely linked to Man, members moving between both bands.

Yeah, they’ve got two tracks on the “Christmas At the Patti” 10” LP with Deke and the ‘very famous” B. J. Cole

And I’ve already watched the Rockpalast concert. Never got to see Man live, just Deke’s band in Eastleigh, around the time of the Iceberg/Kamikaze LPs.

Unfortunately I remember it when it was released. I bought hundreds of copies for stores and it was the worst decision I made as a buyer. Hate this album with a vengeance even today. I don’t think I have ever seen a disc end up in SP&S vans that toured the country with deleted stocks so fast.

I was in my local record shop and it was in the 50p bin. I took it to the counter and the guy said you really don’t want to buy this.

I said I was a big fan and he said after this you won’t be.

Side 1, 21.04 minutes of gorgeous music created from Robert Wyatt’s Cuckooland album. The packaging of the album, the artwork and the transparent gold vinyl are exquisite.
