Epic (in length) tracks; tell us about your favourite

Minstrel Boy - 17:49 of Irish melancholy. Wonderful.

Yes, I hear TR being forever criticized which I’ve never understood, to my mind it’s a superb story, and the tone of that guitar, and Pick Withers drumming.

Telegraph Road was someone else’s suggestion that I endorse. As well as qualifying for this threads definition of “epic”, if is one of those tracks that I can remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it.

Hendrix. Voodoo Chile. 14:50 of wonderment on an album of wonderment which is imo yet to be surpassed by rock bands.

Good call and the Steve Winwood Eric Clapton live take at MSG is also epic.

Closer to Home (I’m your Captain) by Grand Funk Railroad. Short by one second on original album but 10 minutes exactly on Greatest Hits.

With a bit over 9 minutes perhaps not exceptionally long, but one of my favourites is Before the Bullfight by David Sylvian, from Gone to Earth.

East Coast Racer by Big Big Train, especially any of the live recordings.

Don’t know that one but ‘train’ prompts me to suggest the 10m Stimela (the Coal Train) by Hugh Masekela.

Cracking choice :+1:

‘The Way of the World’ - Parts 1 and 2 from ‘No Smoke Without Fire’ (1978) by Wishbone Ash. I think I read somewhere that Andy Powell had said that this was composed as an ‘epic’. Not the most famous WA (Argus, New England) but it was the first album I heard by them when I was in my last year at school and it is a great album I feel.

‘Shhh/Peaceful’ from ‘In A Silent Way’ by Miles Davis (1969). Groundbreaking album for the Jazz Fusion to follow.

Greasy Truckers version of Spunk Rock hands down. Deke said that because of the power cut (3 day week- remember that?) the schedule was disrupted and the mobile recording truck crew came back from an unscheduled lunch break after the band were already about 10 minutes in.

Just because I did two tours with them, I feel I have to be a little impolite and do a gentle correction- Lynyrd Skynyrd. Apologies.

“The Lord’s Prayer” from Roy Harper’s Lifemask LP. 22m:55s
(with Jimmy Page)

Classic Man. Twin guitar heaven. I have the original vinyl along with the full concert on 3 cd’s. Don’t think they ever played better, although Jam Up Jelly Tight from Back to the Future comes close and is even longer I think.

Can I add ‘The Same Old Rock’ and ‘Me and My Woman’ on Stormcock…

I have the original vinyl and a CD which only has the Man tracks from the original release. Wasn’t aware that the full concert was available, so will be ordering that later. Thank’s for the heads-up. JUJT is ok, but I much prefer Man with Deke in the line-up.

Thanks for reminding me of Man but when I saw them at Birmingham Town Hall in the mid-1970s it was Triple Guitar Heaven as the legendary… well at least genuine late 1960’s SF superstar, John Cipollina toured with them.

Stormcock …Fabulous… could be his very best.
