Fast speakers

My thoughts exactly, especially in terms of the design of each speaker. Also the XLS is almost twice the price of the ATC. In my 3.7 by 3.6 metre room perhaps the ATC will be too powerful. Having said that, overblown bass isn’t something I’ve experienced at all in my square room. Even with the Harbeth HL5.

That makes your room 13.32m2 in total, my guess is that the SCM40 are a bit too big for that space…

You might consider the smaller SCM19 as well? It got some raving reviews in terms of dynamics and bass response as well when it was released.

These also are generally the ones with less bass output, which links back to earlier observations about perception of speed of bass…

It does seem to be a large speaker for the space but I’ve never been completely satisfied with the bass reproduction in my room apart from the HL5. Even these were never too much in the bass department. I think the trick is that there is a lot of absorption in my room and the speakers are far away from the walls.

Right, i understand…

You could perhaps also consider getting a pair of fast smaller speakers and pair them with a dedicated subwoofer. There are some very fast dual-driver subwoofer designs like the B&W PV1D, which might be a good pairing with a pair of fast monitor speakers. But it’s up to you to determine what works best for your room / size!

I don’t think the fillings in my teeth could take it

Subwoofers are a big No no for me. I can hear the timing delay and the immediacy and coherency is lost.

I found that was significant with the ATCs. It is sometimes asserted that, being a closed box design, the ATCs are agnostic over positioning, but that was not my experience. When I moved mine well out into the room, all aspects of the sound improved, but particularly bass tightness.

Pairing SCM40s with NAP135s sounds very interesting and well worth trying. Do let us know how you get on if you decide to try them.

will do. I’ve been getting a lot of advice that ATC may be a little too large for my matchbox room. I’m a little confused now. I will still arrange a demo when i get free from work but I am getting the impression I may need to continue with standmount speakers.

Has anybody lived with the Magico A1?

I recently (three days ago) got the ATC scm40, and I find no problem with them in my room which is 4m x 4m. The room have a lot of bookshelves along the left and right walls relative to the speakers, so I guess it counts as treated in a way. So far no problem with the acoustics. Also in a smaller room you probably don’t go very loud anyway, so the output is not overwhelming. At least that is how I understand it.

My Supernait 2 seems happy to drive these speakers at the relevant volume. Oh, and the sound is very good, although the speakers still are new and not run in. But do listen to the ATC:s, I can see why that is good advice, as some of my well known music tracks do change in how they are presented, but for the most part in a positive way!
