Really not a city person, but if forced in the UK I would nominate Stirling. London I generally detest, dipping in very rarely for an exhibition or similar and then escaping as fast as possible!
In Europe from places I have visited Siena or Bruges (out of season).
Worldwide my pick is Samarkand which I visited in the 90’s. It was magical then, i just hope it still is.
This is a really hard one for me because i have two favourite cities. Istanbul and Baku. If push came to shove probably Istanbul, but only because of the huge variety of nightlife and culture. Baku though without any doubt has the most friendly and hospitable people that i have met anywhere in the world.
I visited Samarkand back in the mid 1980s when I spent some time in what was then the Soviet Union (Uzbekistan of course being one of the 15 SSRs). It was amazing – if a bit tatty and in need of TLC – then, and so were its sister Silk Road cities Bukhara and Khiva but apparently since the fall of the USSR and Uzbek independence it’s had a bit of money spent on it.
Am hoping to revisit within the next couple of years.
The year Mum died I decided to spend Christmas in either a Muslim or Communist country and firmly get away from the Christmas hostilities
Spent Christmas at the Nacional , an interesting hotel with (if my memory is right , a picture of Meyer Lansky as well as the likes of Nat King Cole) . I remember that on Christmas Day both the runner Paula Radcliffe and the actor Christopher Plummer were at the poolside
