First Christmas Song?

Hi to all, I thought it would be nice to ask if anyone has played any Christmas tunes yet ? I always play my first song on December 1st.

I always start by playing, ‘Jingle Bells’ by Jim Reeves from his, ‘Twelve Songs Of Christmas’ (CD) I’ve listened to this album since I was kid growing up in the early 70’s. I think it’s a great album and sounds superb… I’ve still got the original vinyl copy which is a little worn now but still sounds good…

All the best…

I think that prior to Dec 1st anything overtly Christmassy should be banned in public places (shops, streets, media etc.). But for home? Clearly a matte of ersonal preference, but for me it’s not Christmas yet! I actually don’t play any Christmas music until Christmas Eve, when I use it to build atmosphere as preparations happen for festivities. I might play more on Xmas Day, depending on circumstances - who is here, and what we’re doing - but that’s it!

Nothing gets played until December and in reality nothing gets played until the day we put the tree up. That would most usually be today but Mrs. H. is tired after a day in Sheffield with the offspring and I’m tired after 5 hours of non-alcoholic beer in an insanely busy Chester with friends from school followed by a journey home by train which ought to have seen me home before midnight but, thanks to Manchester’s incompetent insistence it can cope with several major events at once, saw no bus arrive until 12:40am and my head not hit the pillow until 1:40am. That was followed today by a trip to The Lowry to perhaps put us in a festive mood by seeing Count Arthur Strong’s A Christmas Carol. Despite the excessive mirth around us it was absolutely dreadful.

We have no playlist but the use of the “Christmas” tag produces this small collection. A mix of locally ripped CDs; Qobuz and Tidal. It is played as the tree goes up. There are odd evenings when it gets played when there’s nothing to be done but relax with a hot drink; a snack and a good book or company. It gets played if we have guests. Probably gets played maybe 5 to 8 times in total.

I am looking forward to my purchase of Louis Wishes You A Cool Yule CD by Louis Amstrong, released by Decca Records.

What? No ‘Christmas In The Heart’ by Bob Dylan! On the other hand …

I remember that in my childhood days my father would always dig out ‘Christmastide With Kaempfert’ and ‘Joy To The World’ by the Roger Wagner Chorale, both of which I picked up on fleabay for a pittance.

Radio stations started playing Christmas tunes well before December this year; seem to get earlier with each passing season. Let’s start a campaign to keep Christmas in December.

I played a little known Xmas choon by Mariah Carey yesterday, just as a system test track you understand…

These Christmas With My Friends albums are my favourite. Not so much the Diana Krall, which is too schmaltzy. None have been played so far, it doesn’t feel remotely Christmassy yet.

I can’t think of anything worse than playing Christmas tunes……at any time of the year!!

I spent an hour in the local gym on Saturday. The radio station was playing wall to wall Christmas pop songs. It was driving me nuts. Dreadful stuff ( apart from 2000 Miles by the Pretenders).
I made a quip about it at reception on the way out. The lady said I was lucky as they had to suffer it all day.

I used to work in an office which overlooked a Christmas fair.

I’ve carried a pathological hatred of Johnny Mathis and ‘When a child is born’ ever since.

I always start with Ki ho’alu Christmas. An album of mainly instrumental slack key guitar music on Dancing Cat Records.
