First LP recommendation for a vinyl newbie?

The poor girl might have a heat attack with the opening track unless she plays I Talk to the Wind first. Great suggestion though.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden

Sublime music and a really good sounding record as well.

If you’re going in that direction, why not Bat Out Of Hell ?

How about Tubular Bells, but it depends on her music taste

I love BOFH. BUT the 3 vinyl copies I have had are all shocking pressings , the sound seems so compressed with very limited dynamics range to my ears !

Has anyone got an idea of a quality mastered / pressed version please ?

I like the idea of a heat attack!

I would rather pull my own tooth out with a set of pliers than listen to BOOH! The poor girl does not deserve that. In fact, nobody does!

You have very good ears.

I just looked and the best DR of a vinyl pressing of BOOH is 11 - not very good. It’s a 2014 European pressing.

The best I can see is the 1977 CD US press with a DR of 12.

It was sort of tongue-in-cheek; I get it though.

You have to suspend some rational thought if you listen to it (it’s kind of cheesy), but I think it’s a masterclass of songwriting basics in terms of music and lyrics.

Cinematic is a good way to describe it - and not everyone likes that.

Bob Dylan it ain’t.

Get her all those for starters (with the exception of anything by Clapton; no one deserves such punishment).

When she’s played those to death, she needs to hear at least another thousand or so.

Something she will enjoy, not something you think she should have because it is a classic album loved by ageing forum members, likely one that drives hi-fi shop staff to near desperation when they see a customer come in with it.

When I got my first system, I would have hated my uncle choosing a record he thought I should have or like; I would have preferred a record token or cash so I could choose my own. Probably best to take her to a record shop and let her choose her own if you live close enough, or ask her to send you a list of records she would like.

Yes, ic the first things I heard on a record had been jazz or crooning, chances are I’d never have wanted a system of my own!

Thanks B, not a bad shout, enthusiasm is half the battle, that’s what Thor says anyway!

Excellent album indeed, although might be a bit too pared back for a first LP.

When I first listened to it I did not appreciate the humour one iota. I was about 15 and it was an album of the month from Britannia, automatically sent out. Try as I might I couldn’t get into it at all. I sent it back. Rock, prog. to heavy, was serious stuff for that serious-minded teenager!

 Yup!

Agreed, but that is not the remit I’ve been given! I have to choose and send . There is probably a petard with my name on it ready to be hoisted.

Plenty there. You’ve given me an idea with BM: Legend!!

Perchance Queen Greatest Hits also, although a little compressed due to the number of tracks on the standard release.

If that is the case, I would get her something that has been featured on Stranger Things or other TV shows she might watch. A friend’s mid 20s daughter, has got into lots of music from that show and bought the vinyl. Unless of course she has asked for a classic album that is now used to torment staff in hi-fi dealers, in which case I am sure you will get lots of suitable suggestions here.
