First LP recommendation for a vinyl newbie?

Two excellent suggestions. My first New World was a cfp in ‘72.

An LP quest; I like it!

I bought quite a few Classics For Pleasure from Woolworths… £1 each I think…

Beethoven piano sonatas was great, I loved the Appassionata, also The Firebird, lots of Tchaikovsky…

Takes me back, jumpers for goalposts

Some great suggestions maybe consider something that played to the strengths of vinyl format as an experience.

Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds

Amazing voice or Richard Burton narration a mixture of tracks and a story to follow and reason to listen the whole way through.

Great art work on Gatefold, Double LP.

16 page book with lyrics and great art work.

If you like dynamics, get the heavyweight version

Isn’t the logical answer to simply choose a favourite album and then just find the best sounding pressing via Discogs and the Hoffman forum? That would save a lot of cogitation!

Great call, although, I could never abide the red weed theme, the dolorous nature of which is probably the emotional point!

Would you give up your mortal soul so readily?

I already have - I’ve sold my Naim gear !

For some people one of the appeals of vinyl is the (sometimes) magnificent covers/inners/sleeve notes etc, which often don’t/didn’t translate to cd/cassette/download/stream. Maybe factor that into a few choices?

If part of the point if this exercise is to recommend a great first album that ALSO sounds fantastic, then it’s got to generally be something pre-90s. Like Dan’s mention of Thriller. It is an excellent sounding record.

Heaven forbid you’d buy Definitely Maybe - probably the best worst-sounding album in my collection.

These suggestions are all good - needs to be something in the 60s/70s/80s

Full Moon Fever good as well; good first album if you like TP

I bought a digital copy on Qobuz years ago - absolutely dreadful compressed tinny sound and a complete injustice to how I recall it in my youth. Such a shame.

If You Wait is probably the best of their releases for me.

Is she looking to start collecting things she’ll actually enjoy listening to or is it a case of collecting classic album releases on vinyl as a hobby?

Does she even have a record player? Some youngsters I’ve spoken to collect records but rarely/never play them.

While there are many good/classic suggestions a lot just aren’t my cup of tea (and I’ve tried to listen to them) primarily because I was too young to enjoy them on release despite knowing they’re really special for others.

So many albums we individually cherish were part of our adolescence/younger lives and will have specific memories/emotions linked to them.

My local HMV has increased the number of albums they stock. They also have very cheap record decks, but then I started listening on a secondhand Dansette. There are plenty of younger people in the store.

A bit of both! She wants to start with some classics (that’s our recommendations and the first purchase) to establish a foot-(ear?)-hold, before venturing further over the pack ice.

Her mother is buying the deck.

I probably should stay out of this, as I gave up vinyl a long while ago, but for music choices, if you’re going classical, the Nutcracker (probably just the Suite). Or Pictures at an Exhibition. Or - perhaps a slight dark horse, something by Mendelssohn - the Violin Concerto, the Italian Symphony or the Midsummer Night’s Dream music.

For popular music, one I didn’t see mentioned is Graceland. I think the music has worn well and is somewhat unique. And I think my CD (c. 1986) sounds quite good.
