Thanks for posting these Debs, might get along to watch Stage 6 as I’m not too far away from Cirencester - they might need to bring gravel bikes as the roads out this way are pretty rubbish!

Some bad news:

Stage 6, 7, and 8 of the Tour of Britain 2022 has been cancelled due to the death of the Queen.
It maybe a shocking overreaction to enforce a need to cancel sporting events, but this is what has happened.

Some good news:

La Vuelta a España is proceeding as planned

Just back from shops after getting supplies. ‘The Mercurian’ (as my partner insists on calling it) and rider going nicely after handlebar and saddle adjustments.

Very nice too (the bike that is!) is this the same Mercian who hand-build steel-framed pedal pushers in Derby?

Thanks Jonners, the very same!

The frame is shabby but fits me and is 531. It was an ebay find just before the second lockdown. I had the best bits of my old (too big) bike transferred to this one.

Have you got a Mercian? I mean, I can see that your bike in your avatar is totally modern but you might have an old steely too.

Nope Christopher_M but I almost bought a steel bike last year as I’d read the frames offer superlative levels of comfort which is what I need for the roads where I live. Mercian came up in my Google searches and I was tempted but my head was turned by another English brand called Genesis. What put me off though was (and still is) the 2 year waiting list. I then thought I probably needed an endurance bike with some clever frame material or suspension trickery which is how I ended up with the Bianchi in my avatar.

I have a stainless steel (Columbus xcr) bike that I use infrequently but it is the loveliest ride. Sort of ‘fluid’ yet it is actually quite stiff, and not especially heavy. It is by Zullo.

I also have Ti and Carbon bikes and they all feel different. I know that this is not wholly due to frame material but they do seem to have specific characters.

On holiday in the Peloponnese and just been on a brilliant days touring in the East Mani. Yes I know it’s an e-bike and therefore not a ‘proper’ bike but as a way of travelling very hilly terrain in 30 degrees it is brilliant. It’s a Riese & Muller and quite possibly the best fun I’ve had on 2 wheels. 2 batteries so a range of 180 km. Superb Bosch CX hub motor but the best bit is the Envolio gears which is a hub gear that effectively works as a Continuous Variable Transmission. You just twist the handle up or down depending on how you are feeling - amazing. Will don lycra and get on road bike to do penance on return to Blighty. Photos on nice photos thread

“Yes I know it’s an e-bike and therefore not a ‘proper’ bike…”

Sadly, there’s an awful lot of snobbery around cycling as there is in Golf I find. I don’t ride an eBike but if folks want something of a halfway house between pushing the pedals themselves and a motorbike then good on 'em and who is anyone to criticise?

“Yes I know it’s an e-bike and therefore not a ‘proper’ bike…”

While I sometimes shake my head in frustration at e-bikes, I always remember an encounter with a cyclist in a coffee shop a few years ago.

He commented that it was his first time on his Giant e-bike (road bike with drop bars). I joked that it was “cheating”. His response - “Well I am 85, you know. It helps me keep up with the younger guys and keep socialising”.

I saw him at the same cafe a few weeks later and asked how it was going with his new e-bike. His response “It was my 86 birthday yesterday, so I road 86 miles to celebrate”.

That’s proper cycling.

A stupendous ride yesterday. Dieppe to Paris. Have never done 200k before. Think my derrière might well say “non” to any future attempts. Great fun. First 2 hours freezing cold, then a top sunny ride with barely a breeze for the rest of the ride. Paris at rush hour was interesting- though French car drivers and cyclists seem to respect each others space much better than the UK.

Have been off the bike with a sore knee recently but managed 75 miles yesterday and 40 today. Fat and slow but at least I’m riding again :grinning:

Been out for spin in the New Forest. Really enjoyable but one of my fellow cyclists fared less well after encountering White Van Man which wrecked things somewhat.

A short spin in the New Forest on Beaulieu Heath, on ‘The Mercurian’ and ‘Dawsie’. We are now home for tea and carrot cake.

Lovely ride.
